2.0 out of 5 stars A Shot of Insulin, Please
After reading the editorial review and several of the listener comments, I decided to borrow this CD from the library prior to buying it (which is not my usual Vince Gill habit). Thankfully, I saved [my money]. Although Vince's voice and guitar playing are as always beautiful, the song lyrics and style are monotonous, sugar-coated drivel about his new-found love for Amy...

5.0 out of 5 stars Gill makes happy music, but good music, April 20, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye (Audio CD)
Those who love the traditional, heart-wrenching country ballads to which Vince Gill's voice is so well suited, may be disappointed with this new album full of happy songs. And unlike his last cd, steel guitars are conspicuously absent from this new collection. There are only hints of banjo and fiddle on some of the songs. But who could blame him? His last album, The Key, was a traditional country masterpiece, and radio wouldn't play it. DJ's snubbed the beautiful duet w/Patty Loveless, even after it won a CMA award. It's not surprising his next album would be more pop-flavored. Fans of Gill's music, however, know that this is not much of a departure for him; High Lonesome Sound was thought to be a bluegrass album only to those who just heard the title track. There were other styles featured, including jazz and blues. And some of his biggest hits were pop and rock-flavored. Vince Gill is versatile, that's clear, and even though he is currently riding an emotional high, the artist in him still knows how to make good music, and it's here in this cd. His voice is as good as ever, and goes into the falsetto effortlessly on "For The Last Time". I especially liked "Feels Like Love" with its bouncy rhythm and Gill's signature guitar wizardry, and the perfect waltz : "The Luckiest Guy in the World" has such a sweet melody that it stays in your head. Then there's the duet with Amy Grant: "When I Look Into Your Eyes". Their voices do not blend to make a third voice like the Vince Gill/Patty Loveless harmonies do, but it is nonetheless pleasing to the ear. Gill's daughter Jenny enhances "That Friend of Mine" with her background vocals. She's got a great voice. A bunch of happy songs listened to one after another, may be too gooey for you, but individually, on their own merits, each song is well written and well executed. This album is well worth the money and the time you invest in it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the Professional Critics - What Do They Know?, May 7, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye (Audio CD)
It's so funny that the so-called "critics" of the music world have blasted this album for being too mushy and too sentimental. Good Lord, people. What is romantic music supposed to be? This CD is a refreshing change from the banality and immaturity of most of the pop ballads circulating today. And why don't people stop criticizing artists who step outside of their normal realm to record something different? Look at Linda Ronstadt, Barbra Streisand, Gary Morris, and countless others whose voices have leant themselves to explore their talents in other genres of music! So, with that said, fans, just enjoy this Vince Gill album. Whether you approve or care about his marriage to Amy Grant, it doesn't matter. The music on this album is really very, very good. I think it's one of his best albums. "Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye," is one of the nicest sounding country songs I've heard in ages. He doesn't scream, he doesn't moan and groan; he just expresses his love in his usual graceful tenor. So, critics, you go on and blast albums like these and us melody-hungry fans will continue to eat them up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD, April 24, 2000
This review is from: Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye (Audio CD)
I was unsure of this CD before I bought it. The reviews I had read were not favorable. I had read mushy, giddy, and he should have keep it in the bedroom. The reviewers were correct. It is all of these things and I love it. His marriage to Amy Grant was highly visable. Everyone is connecting every song with his love for Amy. I am listening right now to a song by Tim and Faith and the lyrics go something like this. I want to make love to you all night until the sun comes up. I want to feel you in my soul. No one has ever commented on their songs as being to mushy or giddy. Vince's new CD is very worth the buy. His duel with Amy is very good. His song "That Friend of Mine" with Jenny singing backup could not be better. Some songs rock, some are bluesy and some are just downright terriffic. His guitar playing is exceptional, as always. This album is not as country as "The Key" but who cares. Vince is as always the best. Linda from Texas

4.0 out of 5 stars Striking A Balance......, April 19, 2000
This review is from: Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye (Audio CD)
One never knows exactly what the next Vince Gill album might bring, but historically, his projects have possessed more class than could be summoned by all the Wrangler butts in Nashville combined. His latest effort is different, a slightly lighter fare perhaps, yet certainly no compromise of his usual standard.

Few artists reveal themselves in the way that Vince does.... over and over again. A refreshing change from the introspective five-star masterpiece - The Key, Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye is a glimpse into the heart of a man who is comfortably perched at the top of his game, and drinking deeply from the fountain of renewed perspective. Less "complicated" does not necessarily translate to less "interesting". If the lyrics are not what we have come to expect from Vince, perhaps it is because his wry sense of humor about love and such matters has been softened by the woman who inspired much of this material... Amy Grant. The next time we see the lovely Mrs. Gill, we'll be sure to thank her for that naughty, but still nice, "grin" in Vince's voice.

Vince is joined in this latest outing by such session icons as Brent Mason, Randy Scruggs, and Michael Omartian. Their collective stealth is matched only by Vince's own considerable instrumental contributions. There is more than enough of his "in the zone" guitar work here to keep even the oldest and most jaded Vince Gill fan deliriously happy. His trademark plaintive tenor has never been sweeter or purer than in such tunes as Look What Love's Revealing and When I Look Into Your Heart (the much-anticipated duet with his new bride).

Background vocals were provided by by long-time fan favorites; Jeff White, Billy Thomas, and Andrea Zonn, among others. Perhaps the sweetest moment on the disc comes when daddy's girl, Jenny Gill, provides harmony vocals for her father's tribute to his new bride on That Friend Of Mine. Like all true, blood harmony, one is barely able to discern where the exquisite nuances of his voice end, and his babys begin, yet she holds her own in a most grown-up way. Upon hearing this cut, one is left to comtemplate the wonders that impressive gene pool has most likely wrought in daughter Jenny.

Thankfully, Vince hasn't abandoned his country roots. There are a few cuts that will play well on the Opry stage, and something for the "no longer country" radio market. There is a raucous uptempo Elvis-like, only better just- gotta- dance tune, Baby Please Don't Go, that promises great fun for fans in live performances. Another highlight would be the more- than- a- little sultry, Little Things; in which Vince proves that forty-something can still be very sexy and will most assuredly spark sales of hair brushes all over the country.

There are times in all our lives, Vince Gill's included, when the heart soars and love has to be celebrated. This is the music for that time.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for romantics!, January 10, 2002
By
Gennie Bailey (Savannah, Georgia United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye (Audio CD)
...Yes, Vince is love and it shows, so why shouldn't he share these wonderful feelings with the rest of the world? If you want my opinion, there's no-one better to sing a good love song than Vince. It's almost his specialty. That's why I enjoyed this CD so much. Vince's happiness in his personal life project into his music and what we're served with is 12 wonderful, passionate, heartfelt songs.

Every song on the album is fantastic, but I do have a few personal favorites. They include the following:

"Feels Like Love": This is such a great song! It's a fun, upbeat tune about how a woman makes a man feel.

"Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye": Hands-down my favorite track on the CD! I still don't understand why this wasn't a hit on radio. It's typical Vince: romantic, soft, and passionate. It's almost as if he's singing directly to you when you hear it. Such a beautiful song. It had so much potential. Such a shame radio overlooked it.

"When I Look Into Your Heart": This song strays a bit from country to the adult contemporary side, but that's not a bad thing. Here Vince duets with new wife Amy Grant and it's just magic. Their voices blend so beautifully and you can hear the love they have for one another on this track.

"Shoot Straight From the Heart": Yet ANOTHER song overlooked by radio! This is a killer song! It's another upbeat song about looking at life in a positive light and trusting in the one you love to help you through.

And finally, there's "Hey God", Vince's tribute to golf buddy Payne Stewart, who died in October 1999 of a plane crash. Here Vince is talking to God about how good of a friend Payne was and how he'll be missed by family and friends. It'll bring a tear to your eye for sure.

In short, "Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye" is a wonderful album and should've been a bigger hit. I think too many people were making a big deal about Vince's love life and forgot to REALLY listen to the songs. If you're a Vince fan or just a fan of a good country love song, you should have this album. ... it's very good.

Gennie Bailey-Rogers

5.0 out of 5 stars So what if he's happy and his music shows it, he's entitled, July 31, 2000
By
This review is from: Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye (Audio CD)
I can't believe some of the reviews I have read. I think this cd is awesome, and I listen to it all the time. Why should Vince be singled out because he's in love? Making love till the sun comes up sounds good to me. It's not any different than Tim and Faith singing it to each other. True, it's not a traditional Vince cd, but hey, I think he's entitled to sing about being in love. There is no one more dedicated to country music, and it's roots, then Vince. I'm sure he will prove that in the days and years to come. Give the man a break. Hey, at least he didn't change his name, find an alter ego, and sing about that. I'd much rather hear about him being in love. I wish him and Amy all the happiness in the world, and want him to know that the first time I heard the cd, I knew he and Amy had made the right choice. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being in love, and wanting to sing about it. I would recommend, and have done so, the cd to anyone that cares anything about Vince and his music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't stop listening to this CD..., April 20, 2000

This review is from: Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye (Audio CD)
I rushed out and bought this CD the morning it came out. Played it in the car all the way home...am still listening to it now. It is a tremendous departure from Vince's previously recorded music as a solo artist, but not so far off the beaten path of the stylism that he did a few years ago with the rock band, Pure Prairie League. "Pop"ish, yes. Country...less so, but still within today's boundries of "country." The title song, "Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye" is country enough, as is "Feels Like Love," "Baby Please Don't Go," and "That Friend of Mine." The other songs are a nice blend of pop and country. He stepped way out of his norm in some of the lyrics, which I think is refreshing! There are stories in these songs, stories that uplift and make one realize that life doesn't have to be lived in the dark to be interesting. Living in the light can be exciting, refreshing, and joyous. That's this album, in a nutshell. Ignore what the so-called "critics" say on this, kids. They're just irritated because he's not complaining in his music about how terrible his life is. Nothing ugly to report here, so it's...eek! Not news! Thank GOD! As for the musicality of this CD... well, you can't pass up some great VG guitar. It rocks, it soars, it flies, it drops you to earth, it makes you wanna dance.

I, a very devoted Vince Gill fan, find this CD to be like Vince himself, unique. So what if every song has to do with love and the way he is feeling about his new wife and marriage. There's a song for each different mood. From the bouncy, and swingy "Baby Please Don't Go" to the mellow "One", each song with it's own personality. It is unlike his previous releases, but still just as good if not better. His songs don't always have to be about heartache and down times to be a number one single or album. Now he sings about happy times. His voice is as strong as ever. These songs have true feeling in them. If he were to put out the same music all of the time, I wouldn't feel the need to go out and buy his new releases. I feel that alot of the negative feedback on this CD is due to Vince's personal life and has nothing to do at all with the contents of the CD itself. I think everyone should listen to this CD a second or maybe third time again and really pay attention to the lyrics and the passion Vince sings with. It may just surprise most of you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vince Is Very Happy....And It Shows!, July 8, 2000

This review is from: Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye (Audio CD)
Well, I must admit after the "hard-core" country ofVince's last effort "The Key" (the best CD of 1998 in myopinion), his latest CD took awhile to "grow" on me. It is more Country-pop than anything he has ever done. It is also filled with "happy love songs" (except the touching "Hey God" dedicated to his friend Payne Stewart who died in a plane crash last year). However, even with all these "happy love songs", Vince delivers great melodies, awesome guitar licks and as always his high smooth tenor voice. The title track is vintage Vince encouraging us to cherish each monent as we never know when it will be our "last kiss". The up-tempo tracks "Feels Like Love" (the latest single with a video that features his daughter Jenny and his wife Amy Grant), "Shoot Straight From Your Heart" and "Baby Please Don't Go"(a rockus Elvis-like track) are stand outs on this splendid CD. Also the "duets" with Amy Grant and Jenny Gill, "When I Look Into Your Heart" and "That Friend Of Mine" respectively, showcase this very talented family. Overall, this is feel good music that is "head and shoulders" above most of the music played on Country Radio today. I highly recommend Vince Gill's "Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye".
