When I moved to NYC in '93, a friend got me an older edition of this and it was worn to pieces 5 years later when I moved away. I get this for all friends who move there. I'm sure there are other books that serve the same purpose but I'm a big fan of the Lets Go series for all my travels (save for Peru where it is inferior to the Lonely Planet guide).
