4.0 out of 5 stars Actually quite funny!
When I saw the barely-advertised trailers for this movie I thought it looked beyond idiotic and unoriginal. I mean, how many comedies can you make about being in prison that don't cross-reference the same jokes (i.e. prison rape, prison gangs, prison fights, sociopathic warden, etc.)? I didn't get around to seeing it until it was on DVD and I only gave it that chance...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good enough to see once.
I thought this was funny. It's not knee slapping hilarious. It doesn't make you think about the larger context, and the plot is pretty inane. However, if you like quirky comedies, like Arrested Development or any Will Farrell movie, this is for you. If for nothing else, I'd watch this movie for Chi McBride's character. Nothing makes a prison movie funnier than a...

4.0 out of 5 stars Actually quite funny!, January 16, 2008
This review is from: Let's Go to Prison (Rated & Unrated Versions) (DVD)
When I saw the barely-advertised trailers for this movie I thought it looked beyond idiotic and unoriginal. I mean, how many comedies can you make about being in prison that don't cross-reference the same jokes (i.e. prison rape, prison gangs, prison fights, sociopathic warden, etc.)? I didn't get around to seeing it until it was on DVD and I only gave it that chance because my best friend saw it and told me it greatly amused him.

The final verdict: dry, quirky, and slow-paced humor isn't for everyone, but those who can appreciate comedic build-up and a unique twist ending would REALLY enjoy this. Amidst the negative reviews I was happy to see there were others like me who "get it" as in it's not really meant to be a laugh-out-loud riotfest but more like... Napoleon Dynamite. Subtle & slow yet obviously funny because it's ridiculous (which is so much harder to accomplish well and I think both films do so wonderfully).

The three principle actors worked really well together. You come to like them all better as the film progresses, which was cool because at first all you see is an immature jerk, a spoiled prissy brat, and an overpowering man-buying love-fearing rapist. Dax's character has a certain cruel charm but it was Chi & Will (a.k.a. Barry and Lil' Pisces) who stole the show. Every scene with those two was just nailed, I wished there were more.

If you liked Will Arnett in Blades of Glory, I think he's infinitely better in this movie! Just give it a chance!

However, if you like quirky comedies, like Arrested Development or any Will Farrell movie, this is for you. If for nothing else, I'd watch this movie for Chi McBride's character. Nothing makes a prison movie funnier than a giant gay black man that sounds like Barry White. In McBride's own words, "Prepare to be Woo-ed."

3.0 out of 5 stars humorous but not hilarious, April 2, 2007
This review is from: Let's Go to Prison (Rated & Unrated Versions) (DVD)
This light comedy manages to draw on some harsh reality of prison while still being immensely funny and entertaining. Parts of it are quite funny, whereas other parts are complete of silly humour. All in all, a nice DVD rental.

Bought this movie used for very cheap. I have ssen it about 5 or 6 times already, but decided to get it to share with others. It really is surprisingly quite funny. I really didn't think too much before I watched it, but now I could just watch it over and over again.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Riot, December 30, 2010

A great diversion from reality, I found this movie really funny. Although stereotypical of a prison movie, it is is reminiscent of "The Big Bus" "Airplane" and the like.
Campy. Funny. Some twists. No deep meaning ... or deep anything. Kick off your shoes, take some time to shut down and just laugh. This is a movie for it.
