Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Mr. Sillypants, nervous about learning to swim, dreams he is a fish, in this story about conquering a common fear. Ages 3-7.
Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2 Mr. Sillypants, a slightly balding, middle-aged man with wire rimmed glasses, a moustache, and wild plaid pants, has just signed up for swimming lessons at the beach. He worries about all the things that could go wrong (``I hope I don't step on a fish''), finally convincing himself not to go. That night he has a dream about walking through the desert and falling into the sea, where he swims like a fish and turns into a shark. Suddenly he awakens to his alarm in time for swimming lessons and realizes that everything is going to be OK. Large, colorful illustrations on every page are cartoon-like in style. Text is handwritten and appears in various sizes and places on the page. The combination of type and illustrations give the book an unfinished look. It is a little strange to feature an older man to exemplify a child's fear, and then show him sticking out so noticeably among young children who are only waist high to him. The concept of the story is valid and definitely in need for the picture book age level, but the presentation is not believable. Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Lib . , N.Y.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Silly Reading for Toddlers Ever!, July 26, 2000
By
Teresa Mullowney (Horsham, Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews
Excellent reading for the very young, this book focuses on fears and dreams in a pleasant and hilarious way. Mr. Sillypants muses aloud for the reader his fears and expectations for his presence in an upcoming swimming class. Join him as he eats a Dagwood- style midnight snack sandwich, then dozes off for a dream adventure that incorporates his emotions and recent food experience that takes unexpected turns, then ultimately allows Sillypants to emerge victorious and ready to face his lesson! The illustrations are fabulous and reminiscent of the quirky yet hilarious Aunt Mary cartoon strip from National Lampoon Magazine. Share your love of humor and reading as you join your child on this Sillypants adventure!
