Book Description

9 and up4 and up
Sex remains one of the least comfortable — and thus least discussed — topics between parents and children. Even the most enlightened parent can get queasy at the prospect of "the talk," despite its importance in helping youngsters become well-informed teens and responsible adults. Let's Talk About S-E-X is a short, illustrated book that parent and child can sit down and read together. First created by Planned Parenthood in the 1980s, and taking a simple, factual approach to the subject, the book makes that crucial conversation possible and even enjoyable by encouraging open dialogue; offering clear, correct information; and giving strategies for age-appropriate discussions that neither judge nor frighten. The book discusses feelings, what's normal, how and why the body changes, making sense of love and sex, STDs, and much more. The simple language and illustrations invite young readers to revisit the information if they have not absorbed it all in one sitting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great augmentation to discussions with younger kids, January 25, 2009

I bought this after my 9-year-old and I had to begun discussing sex, body changes, self-esteem issues, etc. I would never hand a kid a book as a total strategy for sex education, but this book has been wonderful to augment the discussions we've had and allows my daughter to have some control over the whole process. She grabs it and reads it when she wants to learn more but doesn't feel like asking me, or just wants some private time. I also like that it's written for her age group - quite a few of the books I researched were at too sophisticated a learning/content level for her. Overall, I'm really pleased with this choice.

This book addresses a very wide variety of subjects that are important to share with your changing child. Not too much information for them to take in and it is written in a positive way that encourages children to share their concerns and thoughts with their parents.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing, February 3, 2007

This review is from: Let's Talk About S-E-X: A Guide for Kids 9 to 12 and Their Parents (Paperback)
I purchased this book for my 10 year old son as a basis for discussion for 'the talk'. I found the information provided therein deficient in several categories. There are actually only a couple pages that are devoted to any kind of description or explanation of the sex act itself, and those are non-illustrated and very shallow. The book is much more geared to describing male and female changes during puberty and of course, as a publication of Planned Parenthood, spends considerable time on contraception, STDs, and other topics which are not perhaps reflected in the book's misleading title. I would have returned the book but the return shipping fee would not have justified that process as it would have been more than one-half the cost of the book itself. I would recommend against this book for any purpose.
