5.0 out of 5 stars Some Actual Information About The Tapes (for a change...)
Wayne Leman is a notable linguist and one of the most respected scholars of the Cheyenne language. Ted Risingsun was a Northern Cheyenne elder, great-grandson of Chief Dull Knife, and native speaker of the language. It is his voice you hear on these tapes. If you are interested in the Cheyenne language this is a must-have. If the book seems unavailable on this page,...

1.0 out of 5 stars very basic
there is very little material in this book, practically no grammar, so you won't make your own sentences, no explanations of pecularities of Cheyenne verb, there is a file containing this book somewhere on the Internet, but no sounds to it

Ted Risingsun was a Northern Cheyenne elder, great-grandson of Chief Dull Knife, and native speaker of the language. It is his voice you hear on these tapes. If you are interested in the Cheyenne language this is a must-have. If the book seems unavailable on this page, simply search for "Ted Risingsun"; there is a second version of the course on Amazon which is available.

You will not come away from this audio course speaking Cheyenne like a native, obviously, but no audio course anywhere will do that for you all by itself (perhaps that is why the disappointed linguist-guy has gone about Amazon.com giving one-star ratings to every Native American and African cassette course he could find.) If you are interested in beginning an understanding of this lovely and complex language, however, this is a good place to start.

"Let's Talk Cheyenne" is a great writers' aid for those who will depict Northern Cheyenne conversation. I thought it would help my writing project which includes some every-day talk among Southern Cheyenne who live in Oklahoma. Southern Cheyenne tribal members warned me the languages were different and I would need Southern Cheyenne translation. How true. The Cheyenne have managed to bridge the language difference--not me. I wish the Southern Cheyenne would compile a "Daily use of the Southern Cheyenne Language" following the same approach as this. Superior product that sets an example for Oklahoma Cheyenne students and teachers. Constance and Samuel Kritzberg
