Another Book on a Controversial Subject,
By
This review is from: Let's Weigh the Evidence: Which Bible is the Real Word of God? (Paperback)
Mr. Burton does do a good job in making his views known. Some of his evidence and reasoning are worthwhile, some are not. Many of his interpretations of Scriptures are doubtful. This book does show various differences between the KJV and more modern translations. Some of the differences are significant while many are inconsequential. Burton claims there is a conspiracy among the modern translations to deny basic Christian doctrines. But he fails to show that modern translators are intentionally denying the truth. And the author is too quick to claim that modern omissions are an attack upon the KJV. Burton apparently assumes that the modern translators had a KJV in hand and cut out portions of it to suit their beliefs. Referring to the "Textus Receptus", Burton states that "This is the text that the Protestants of the reformation knew to be the Word of God..." But his evidence here is missing. And again, on page 62, he refers to "the Greek text that real Christians have known to be the infallible Word of God." So again, this book relies on the gut instincts of "real Christians." Not a good idea. Chapter 4 is a worthwhile criticism of The Living Bible. It shows how various parts of The Living Bible do a disservice to what the Bible really says. In summary, this book is worthwhile in various respects but cannot be taken as "gospel" truth.

Paranoid and reveals lack of scholarship,

This review is from: Let's Weigh the Evidence: Which Bible is the Real Word of God? (Paperback)
Burton is convinced that new versions are "out to get" vital doctrines and that this will help lead the world to One Government. In reality, Burton demonstrates that he spent all his time looking for the "differneces" while never really looking into WHY they are there. One short chapter discusses the differences between the TR and the Alexandrian text types but never touches on the issue of textual criticism. For those, like me, who prefer to have first hand sourses on issues like the KJV Only debate, this is a worthy book to have on your shelf because it classically demonstrates a person who starts with their conclusion and then molds the facts to fit. For others, don't waste your time.

Weigh is unbalanced.,

This review is from: Let's Weigh the Evidence: Which Bible is the Real Word of God? (Paperback)
Mr Burton's book is a poorly written polemic on the newer English translations of the Bible. His book, in trying to advocate for the King James Bible, in fact does serious damage to his cause. His book is neither well written nor honest in it criticism of the newer translations. His errors are so onerous that one must believe that the writer was trying to deceive and not interested in honestly exploring the strengths and weaknesses of the different translation.
Three examples that come to mind: 1. KJV was never copyrighted. Half-truth. The word copyright did not exist in 1611 but the concept did and the writers of the KJV used it. 2. The writer uses scripture as if it was speaking of the KJV. This is an outright misuse of scripture. 3. The writer talks extensively of the removal of the word Lord or Christ in the new versions but never mentions where it was added let alone why these change happened. Oops. The best he can muster is that Satan is trying to corrupt our Bible.
