1.0 out of 5 stars Outdated and dangerous advice
I first came across Adelle Davis in the mid 1980s when I became interested in nutrition. I read her books avidly and put into practice many of her suggestions for cooking techniques and vitamin supplements. I was obsessed with my daily protein intake and learned to count the grams of protein I consumed each day. I took megadoses of vitamins in an attempt to cure minor...

I first read Adelle Davis' book, "Let's Eat Right to Keep Fit" was when I was planning to nurse my children back in the early '70's. At that same time, my husband suffered from chronic dehabilitating backpain. After three different diagnoses and 3 surgeries with no relief, we went to a specialist for arthritic disorders, a highly respected doctor and chairperson of the Arthritis Association for the East Coast. My husband was diagnosed with advanced Ankylosing Spondylitis (fusion of spinal column). His aorta was already compromised. My husband followed Adelle Davis's diet describe in "Lets Get Well" and reversed the aortitis. His doctor, who was just begining to retire, said that in all his years of practice at a major medical institution, and his years of following research, he had never witnessed anything like this. He considered writing it up for the journals, but as I mentioned, he was in the process of retiring. Then my son, at 4 1/2 years old developed Stills Disease, a form of Juvenille Rheumatoid Arthritis, which is genetically inherited from fathers who have Ankylosing Spondylitis. The treatment at a major NY hospital included 96 mg of solumedrol alternate day therapy, weening him with large doses of asprin. He was considered one of the 5 most severe cases in the country. I looked to 'Adelle' to try to reduce the horrific side effects of cortisone and high-dose asprin therapy. For four years my son was in an out of remission because I didn't always follow the diet as doctors felt nutrition was never an answer in those days. When I finally realized that my son needed something in that diet in order to be well, I stuck to it and followed Adelle Davis' suggestions carefully. He went into a permanent remission for 8 years, all the while adhering to the diet. At subequent clinic visits, many a doctor would stand outside the door and read the medical history and expect to see on the other side of the door, a very sick, immobile, inactive boy. Instead they saw an alert, energetic, inquisitive boy. They always wanted to know what I was doing and I told them nutrition. "Hmmm" they said. This was a teaching hospital. I would later meet children who were diagnosed with less severe cases of Stills who were dwarfed, deformed, and sullen...who did not have the benefits of the antistress formula describe in Adelle Davis' book. I will be eternally grateful to Adelle for sharing her knowledge. My son during those 8 years, played soccer and won competitions and scholarships for his ability to play classical piano. What a gift she gave my child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Advice on Nutrition, August 8, 2000
This review is from: Let's Get Well (Signet) (Paperback)
Adelle Davis was a brilliant expert in the field of nutrition. Her advice on sensable eating and diet are so applicable and useful, but at the same time simple it will surprise you. No complexity here. She was light years ahead of her time in the field of nutrition, and it is demonstrated here in this great book. I highly advise seeking out her other titles from wherever you can obtain them because they are incredibly valuable. No household is complete without an Adelle Davis reference!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super researcher! Super Lady!, December 9, 2005
Back in the late 1960's, a good friend gave me a copy of Let's Have Healthy Children. After absorbing the message that book delivered, I became a truehearted fan of Adele Davis. She showed us so much research had been conducted confirming the need and uses of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrition. Long before the 1990's it was known folic acid is needed during the first few weeks of gestation to prevent spina bifida. Pre-eclampsia is still treated with magnesium sulfate, but to avoid developing that condition, Adele Davis prescribed the supplements an expectant mother needs. How did she know about these? She perused so many documents and researched studies, much of which occurred before the 1930's.
Some have said her writings are outdated and newer research refutes some of her findings, but the broad picture is she opened the public's eyes about nutrition's role. She told us there have been people curious enough to pursue Vitamin A's impact on skin health, cold fish oil and its role in cardiovascular disease, tryptophan, serotonin, lithium, and the B-complex benefitting the central nervous system and the brain.
Adele Davis planted the seeds. Are we wise enough to pick the fruit?

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book by a great woman. Thanks Adelle Davis!, June 4, 2006

I have been benefitting from this book for the last 20 years. Despite what some doctors say, despite these doctors' ignorance, this woman and her books can do much more for us and our health than a whole lot of doctors, hospitals and the entire pharmaceutical industry.

Adelle Davis teaches us what our body is, how our body functions and what it needs to stay healthy. She was a brilliant woman, a fantastic researcher and we should ALL (doctors included) be thankful that she had the courage to write this FANTASTIC book.

I do not care what some $$$-minded doctors say. I have followed Adelle Davis' advice and I have always had great results, never mind what my problem was. I wish all doctors had the integrity and the courage to read this book, give it a try and accept that they also have a lot to learn from it. Reading this great book one can not only learn a lot but recover from a variety of ailments and illlnesses in a natural, safe way.

I am not going to give any examples (there are too many) on how and how many times I benefitted from following the advice given in this great book. I will only suggest every reader to buy it, read it very carefullly, think about all the author says in her book and find out by themselves.

Why is it that some prefer to call Adelle Davis a quacker? The answer is too obvious: $$$. The pharmaceutical industry and some doctors only want our money; they don't want us healthy. There are too many interests($$$)and patients kept on drugs -even on very dangerous drugs- are much more profitable for the "medical industry".

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is great! I consult it often!, June 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Let's Get Well (Signet) (Paperback)
Adelle Davis's book Lets Get Well is in constant use at our house. It isthe one book I would want to have on hand to consult when one of us is having some physical trouble. For instance: after having a Poison Oak rash for a few days, I looked in the book and found out that vit. C can help stop the itching (I use the back index) I tried it and it really works! I consulted it when I was pregnant( morning sickness, stretch marks, toxemia, pre-eclampsia, pre-mature births, vericose veins/hemmeroids, delivery, etc.). And there have been times that I have heard new studies on the news about health issues that have confirmed Adelle Davis's information time and again --even though this book was written several years ago! She developed thousands of special diets for people who were sick. Her info. is based on actual experience with people who were sick -not just laboratory experiments ( with mice). I've used this book to look up info. on everything from squinting eyes---to kidney stones, and have found out things that we can do at home-nutritionally(or using supplements)-that that can help us solve our problem. It is also a good book to read cover to cover and has information on side effects of prescription drugs and how they increase our nutritional needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential nutritional reference, October 14, 1999
This review is from: Let's Get Well (Signet) (Paperback)
This book should be required reading for all health professionals, and anyone interested in their own health. Davis shows how inadequate the average diet is in supplying us the nutritiants we need, and shows how good nutrition can play a vital role in the recovery of many illnesses. It's all backed up by referenced scientific work, and it shocks me that the medical profession isn't more aware of these results. This book was written over 20 years ago, but we need it now more than ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars A complete and well-indexed "bible" of nutritional info!, February 9, 1999
This review is from: Let's Get Well (Signet) (Paperback)
"Let's Get Well" has been the most used book in my household for many, many years. I have given away numerous copies to suffering people, and they benefitted greatly. I raised my family with this book and "Let's Raise Healthy Children." It has kept my family and their families healthy for all these years. I have been unable to find this book. The book stores said it was out of print. I am delighted to be able to purchase it again, as I had given my last copy away two years ago. Thank you!!

(REAL NAME)
Adelle Davis was a pioneer in the field of natural healing and healthy diet, and many aspects of her writings were so far ahead of their time that they are still being discovered by consumers as "new" ideas. This review is primarily to offset the one-star review posted by a misguided consumer that does not know the proper place to lodge a complaint. Neither Adelle Davis nor the publisher should be held responsible for a transaction, and while it is unfortunate to have been less than desirable, the effect of a bad review is to taint the quality of a writer's work before the public. Be assured, this book is sound reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a treasure trove, December 15, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Let's Get Well (Signet) (Paperback)
I am a "natural treatment" and vitamins fan as most prescriptions for me have bad side effets. Although today anybody can find all kinds of information on the Internet, I notice most are repeats of the same things, with some cosmetic changes. My Adelle Davis book dates back to the 60s when I was so sick with allergies, that a constant sneezing made everybody around me unconfortable. That's when Adelle's savy came to my rescue. Since then, i prize my book like a treasure. I was a sicko when a child, and I can attest that skin problems, cholesterol, eyes, hair, you name it, and something very useful, natural and most important, that works wonders, is there as advice. She detailed the researchs that backed her advice. The problem is that her advice to cure was based on nutrition and vitamins. Big pharmaceuticals may not like that, as they promote their patented expensive medicines and may attact Davis' propositions. I can understand that. A pity for those who based on that, don't believe in her advice. I am a living and now healthy and still looking young proof that the book works. (And I don't mind taking a zillion vitamins and others per day.)
