Let’s Get To What’s Real

"This album is something that I needed to do, for me," Elliott Yamin says of the aptly-titled Let's Get to What's Real, his third album and his first Purpose Music Group/eOne release. "It feels right, and it feels like who I am as an artist. I wanted to make something raw and soulful and organic, so I went wherever the music ... Read more in Amazon's Elliott Yamin Store

Editorial Reviews

Elliott Yamin has already earned a prestigious reputation as both a world-class recording artist and a deeply compelling live performer, having built an impressive body of work as well as an intensely loyal international fan base. On Let's Get to What's Real, the multi-talented artist raises the musical and personal stakes, tapping into the emotional honesty and sonic intimacy of classic soul to create the most inspired and distinctive music he's ever made. The resulting album is the purest expression to date of the musical talent and personal charisma that were first introduced to the public during Yamin's stint as one of the most acclaimed performers to ever compete on TV's American Idol.

Elliott Yamins fresh new creative leap is apparent on such impassioned new tunes as the intimate, insistent Self Control, the rousingly upbeat Gather Round, the poignantly autobiographical Virginia and the commanding title track, whose lyrical sentiments underline the sense of personal commitment that Yamin brought to the project. Those tracks find the artist decisively reinventing his sound, reaching back to the heartfelt immediacy of vintage R&B while remaining firmly grounded in the present.

Let's Get To What's RealI'm not gonna bore you with a track by track review but i will say this if you've heard elliot yamin's first single[3 words]you might be inclined to think that this is a pop album IT IS NOT! This album right here is r&b/soul. Yamin has a powerful, soulful voice and he's not afraid to use it,in other words....HE'S NOT HOLDING BACK! From start to finish elliott delivers the goods and than some. It's nice to hear a male voice[remember those?]one that's not distorted through technology. Now don't get me wrong i'm not one of those people who don't get JUSTIN BIEBER or NICKI MINAJ ect.... there is room even for the blatantly manufactured,i'm saying if you like the sound of the male voice in it's natural state then Mr. YAMIN is your guy. This is a fun album with a voice and sound that is "speaker friendly" BUY IT,BUMP IT AND ENJOY !

I've been a fan of Elliott's voice since his season of "American Idol," and I think this is his best project to date. These songs are such a great fit to his voice and style. It's retro and fresh-sounding at the same time. My favorites are the slow-grooving title track, along with the sexy "Self Control" and the soulful "Virginia." A couple of these tracks, "3 Words" (his current music video) and "Thinkin' Bout You" have a more contemporary feel but still feel at home here. "Enough Love," "I'll Be That Bridge," and "Gather Round" are really feel-good songs and are sure to perk you up. "Downtown" and "Poison" are gritty and fun at the same time. All in all, the tracks complement each other nicely. It's so refreshing to hear new music that is free of auto-tuning and electronica -- real voices and real instruments. All I can say is if you love real music - GREAT music - then you need to buy this album!

This is undeniably some of the best music put out by singer-songwriter Elliott Yamin. This will remain one of my favorite albums for quite some while to come.

Elliott seems to be getting better and better with time; it's a joy to watch him develop his artistry so well. I like the songs, the overall flow of the song set, the electricity and energy of the songs and the way Elliott performs them. The CD boasts excellent numbers like "Gather 'round;" "Self Control;" the amazing "Thinkin' 'bout You;" the poignant "Let's Get To What's Real;" "Poison;" "Downtown" and a whole lot more!

The quality of the sound is first-rate. I really like the way the liner notes are so nicely done. You get great photos of Elliott; song credits and comments from Elliott himself! The lyrics aren't there but that's no problem because Elliott always sings so clearly that I can hear every word of each song.

The songs deal with different kinds of romantic relationships as well as the range of emotions people experience in these relationships. When you listen to this album and the incredibly thoughtful way with which the songs are performed it will truly touch a nerve in you!

This CD is highly recommended for fans of Elliott Yamin; soulful music and five star R&B. If you fit into one or more of these groups, as I certainly do myself, you can't go wrong with this CD.

Elliott Yamin knocks it out of the park with his latest album, "Let's Get to What's Real." He gives a current vibe --- a nod to record execs --- to his urban wheelhouse. With his amazing voice, Yamin easily moves from Hatheway to Usher and back to his own, crystal clear sound effortlessly. Best production value yet. Love this CD and its five star quality!

This is the cd I've been waiting for Elliott
to make since he's been a recording artist.
It's dripping in throw-back funk and is voice
is on fire. The title track is already one of
my favorite songs and I'll be putting it on
repeat often. The pop music he was made to do
before wasn't my cup of tea but I understand
you can't always do what you want to do when you
at the mercy of these by-the-numbers record
companies. He had to step out and produce this
with his own funds. Good job Elliott, I hope
you will get to follow your heart again with
a collection songs like this again in the future.

This is Elliott at his truest and best! The first time I listened to it I found myself disappointed because none of the songs seemed to fit the commercial hits mold we hear on the radio. The second, third, fourth, fifth, etc., times I listened to it I was glad it didn't fit that mold. I can feel his emotion on each song. I can hear his soul. I feel his happiness and sorrow. This CD is a must have if you love Elliott and his soulful side. Some of the songs are reminiscent of early LaBelle albums, especially Night Birds. Listen to the beginning of Enough Love...could be on the Night Birds album.

Interestingly enough this album turns out to be something of a cut and paste job from a 2010 album released overseas called Third Album. Typical in a way of the last five or six years. An artist makes an album, releases it in another country and a year or two later it pops up in the US with a different title and alternate/sometimes remixed songs. Well no matter what type of set up this is,Elliot Yamin is someone who continues to impress. From what I heard I just wasn't wowed by the music on his second album Fight for Love. Seemed to be a bit too bound by a boring formula to me. Who knows I may re-evaluate it in the future. But I very much looked forward to this release having been belatedly lured in by his surprisingly strong 2007 self titled debut. I could tell from that he'd never be inclined to make the same album over and over. Even if he'd misfired on anything, this made the option of bouncing back a good deal more comfortable. With far more creative input than the first time around Yamin is in an excellent creative place here.

Deeply involved in a well oiled sound that celebrates live instrumentation, strong writing and above all high production values this album isn't just one of those retro soul/funk exercises that stays with one aspect of the music and doesn't variate. He gives you a full picture of it,even in a historic sense.. The album opens with the Chicago/gospel inspired handclapped powered uptempo "Gather 'Round". On "Self Control" he's very much in the piano driven Motown styled mode (sorry for all the comparisons;only here for reference) and a very strong combination of melodies.
