4.0 out of 5 stars Message of Encouragement, June 16, 2006
This review is from: The Letter to the Hebrews (New Collegeville Bible Commentary: New Testament) (v. 11) (Paperback)
The Letter to the Hebrews, described by its author as a "message of encouragement," takes the form of a written sermon rather than a letter or an epistle. In his commentary, Daniel J. Harrington writes that the basic theological point of Hebrews is simple: "Christ is both the perfect sacrifice for sins and the priest who offers himself as a sacrifice." Though the major theme in Hebrews is priesthood of the Old Testament and of Christ, Harrington notes that many find Christ's priesthood an appropriate model for the ministerial priesthood and Christian life in general.

The commentary is clear and detailed, building careful links to the culture in which the "letter" was written and to the Old Testament. A section of review aids and discussion questions and an index of citations from the Catechism of the Catholic Church are included. As with other titles in the New Collegeville Bible Commentary, "The Letter to the Hebrews" is a valuable resource for individuals and groups interested in learning more about Scripture and its implications for today's Christians.
