Like pretty much all of Dr. Barclay's books, the Letter to the Hebrews makes the Bible verses that are so difficult to comprehend easy to understand and beautiful. His Bible studies are good whether you're reading the Bible for the first time or whether you're studying it in depth. He gives you a lot of historical background which really helps. I did find the section about priesthood (Hebrews chapter 7) slightly tedious, but that's my only complaint. It's definitely a worth while read.

This is probably the best volume in the New Daily Study Bible series. I would also recommend Hebrews for Everyone by Tom Wright and Hebrews by George H. Guthrie.

Barclay is one of the most insightful commentators of the New Testament. Although much of the background information and schalorship in his commentaries are now outdated, his comments on the relevance of the Bible are still very valuable for today's discerning readers. This is especially true for his volume on Hebrews. For more updated commentary on Hebrews for beginning students, Tom Wright's "Hebrews For Everyone" is a very good choice. The volume on Hebrews in NIV Application Commentary series is excellent for slightly more advanced students.

Some of Barclay's theology is questionable (per Evangelical) but he is the master of Greek translation. No one can touch his explanations of Biblical words. He's also the best at weaving Greek cultural explanations of the time into an explanation of the Biblical text.

Another reviewer remarked that the 'New' Study Bible is missing quite a lot of text from his original work. He was right. Try to buy the older, original works.

Barclay never disappoints!
This is a wonderful commentary to have with a Bible study class on Hebrews. Barclay always brings clarity to portions which are difficult to understand on your own. I, especially, recommend this for help with old Hebrew culture and practices, of which Barclay is an expert. The word studies in this review are invaluable. Highly recommended to anyone trying to delve deeply into Hebrews!

We use this as a reference material in our Bible Study. We have used Barclay's resources for years and are never disappointed. His research and insight give much additional value to the Bible. We would not study without it.

Our adult Sunday school class is currently using this study. It is easy enough for all to read, yet challenging due to the background given into meanings of the words used in the original Greek. The author doesn't skip a chapter or verse, and ties all the concepts together beautifully. He also repeats central themes, and is an excellent teacher. It took us over two weeks to get 15 copies, but they were well worth the wait.
