Book Description

Letter to the One Percent is exactly what it sounds like: a letter to the richest one percent of American households. It is a call to action, a plea for compassion, and a manifesto for the future. It tells the story of their extraordinary success – and how the other 99 percent of Americans missed out. It explains how this divergence caused household income to stagnate, forced millions of Americans into poverty, and triggered the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. It appeals to the better angels of their nature to bear a higher burden -- by paying higher taxes, empowering labor, and cracking down on white-collar crime -- in order to reverse the damage done in the past three decades.

No other writer has dared to speak these truths directly to power. Every other mainstream book preaches to the choir. Only Letter to the One Percent is brave enough to challenge the rich to do what the country needs them to do. It is not an attack. It is not class warfare. On the contrary: It is a challenge to end the class war that the One Percent has been winning and the 99 Percent has been losing.

No other political subject is as timely as this one. No other economic trend is as pivotal. From the financial crisis in 2008, to Occupy Wall Street in 2010, to the presidential election in 2012, the divergence between the One Percent and the 99 Percent has been the most talked-about issue in American current events. And yet, no one has synthesized the causes and consequences of it in a succinct, yet comprehensive, book. No one has translated the protests and the politics into the simple pocketbook impact that it has had on the average American household. This is the biggest story of our time, and Letter to the One Percent is the first book to tell it fully, accurately, and unflinchingly.

5.0 out of 5 stars at last! August 20, 2014
Format:Hardcover
Awesome!

This is an accessible book that covers one of the biggest issues today; wage disparity & the exploitation by the One Percenters of the economy & people of the US. Orlando does a great job of explaining himself succinctly & gracefully. He is not accusatory in his assessment but rather imploring & encouraging of change.

This is a great introduction to American Economics. This should be required reading for all!! By the end of this read, I felt ready to storm some gates & demand change. Hopefully other readers have the same reaction.

PS, the 40 pages of citations was awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars Understanding the dismal science January 13, 2015
Format:Hardcover
Mr. Orlando captures the true essence of what has gone and is currently going wrong with America today. He identifies the key economic indicators that indicate that we are headed to oligarchy and that democracy as we know it is vaporizing as quickly as the middle class. This is an understandable treatise on the dismal science of economics and understandable to those who are not a member of that profession. A must read so that we all know what ails us in hope that we correct the course we are on.

Obamacare having been debated ad nauseam, income/wealth inequality is on its way to become the topic of the year for 2014. You've heard lots of the pros and cons on this subject before, but Anthony Orlando weaves all the threads together in a wonderfully easy-to-read overview. His analysis is well supported with statistics and authorities, all carefully cited in the latter part of the book in case you want to check them out and/or take issue with them; but this doesn't look or feel like an academic tome weighed down with footnotes. It's light and conversational, sort of like the Thanksgiving dinner conversation you might have started if you weren't afraid your right-wing relatives would be offended or, worse yet, would shout you down. In fact, this is a book you might send to those relatives ... if you dare.

I've loosely followed Orlando's blogs, op-eds, and HuffPost contributions for a few years now and have enjoyed reading his take on things; but this book reveals a depth, breadth and strength I hadn't previously realized was there. He's a young guy; maybe he's just coming into his own. In any case, I'm sure we'll be hearing lots more from and about him as time goes on. Letter to the One Percent is a cheap ticket into his growing fan club and the issue it explores is undeniably one of the most critical of our time.
Bravo, Anthony! Keep up the good work.
