This review is from: A Letter to Peachtree and Nine Other Stories (Hardcover)
Oh the pressure, to be the first reviewer.Ten short stories about Irish life by Mr. Kiely. There was a mystery to be solved in Eton Crop. It was one of the "5" stories. Bloodless Byrne of a Monday. Another mystery, a different kind of mystery, also a "5." Mock Battle. I'm not sure what the point of this was. It was about a reenactment of a battle in history. I give it a "3." Through the fields in Gloves. Don't want to give away the surprise ending of this one, told from the view of the perpetrator of 16 assaults on girls. "5" Your Left Foot is Crazy. Goes to a dancing school with a friend, but he never dances. "3" The Jeweller's Boy. A journalist's viewpoint of a pre-teenage group of boys. "2" A Walk in the Wheat. A man returns to his boyhood home, taken from him by his step-mother. "4" The Python. Another, I'm not sure about. There is an emphasis on women he'd known or would like to know (in the Biblical manner). "2" Secondary Top. A teacher is suspected of taking liberties with his young students. "5" A letter to Peachtree. An disjointed, but interesting account written to the narrator's wife back in Georgia of his trip to Ireland. "5" The stories average out to a 3.9, so I give it a 4. |
