An Impressive Debut,
By
This review is from: Letter From St Paul (Audio CD)
The Silencers are a great, yet relatively unknown pop/rock band from Scotland. Their debut album, "A Letter From St. Paul" made a bit of a splash, with the minor hits "Painted Moon" and "I See Red," but for some reason they never caught on. Their sound is similar to their Scottish peers of the time, such as the Simple Minds and Big Country, though they don't necessarily sound like either one. The Silencers have subdued yet driving sound that sticks with you once you've heard it.
Other standout songs are "God's Gift" and the title track, a trippy "instrumental" with an American girl (from St. Paul?) reading a "letter." The whole album is an excellent example of late 80's pop/rock. This is a really good overlooked gem. It's a shame the CD is out of print.

An overlooked 80's Classic,
By Toscano Barga (Southern California) - See all my reviews

Buy this now ! Every song is great, a truly great 80's classic album, unfortunately they never really capitalized on their embry of success with Painted moon, not sure whose fault that is but it's unfortunate. Better late than never, buy it now !

Good Pop from Saint Paul,

Meaning Sir Paul McCartney? Maybe. Reminds me a lot of The Fixx, Tears for Fears and XTC. And they could for sure have influenced Fountains of Wayne in later years. Very catchy pop for a quiet summer in the woods sorrounded by precious lakes and lots of action. A classic of it's time.

5 for the shimmery sound,

I would not compare them to simple minds, though a group that rightfully comes to mind as I hear them is lloyd cole and the commotions, the guitar sound of the smiths, though much more of a slick 80s sound than them, and that is not an insult. They should of been bigger with a sound like this, fits in with other well-knowns of the time. if you love jangle pop (the smiths, rem, let's active) and the 80s wouldn't hurt either (a love of), then you'll dig it, thanks pirate bay
