Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3 Up An attractive series of introductory art books demonstrating three different techniques. The processes and their variations are clearly explained in large print with clear color photos. Each book has an equipment and materials list (most items are easily available), preparatory information, and a variety of applications for each technique. Collage uses a variety of papers and junk materials. Methods include tearing, cutting, pasting, and painting; the results are interesting and attractive. Printing uses junk materials, sponges, clay, felt blocks, and rags as a means of applying paint to paper in patterns and designs. Lettering requires the most sophisticated tools, such as pens, brushes, and inks, and discusses them at greater length. Lancaster describes guidelines for spacing and how to form numerals and upper- and lower-case letters. Experimentation is encouraged, but the focus is on basic calligraphy. Although aimed at beginners, this series could be used by a wide range of ages. Even very young children could do some of the activities mentioned in Collage and Printing. Directions and photos are straightforward and easy to follow. Practical and appealing additional resources for school and public libraries. Nancy Kewish, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Cleveland
