Superb music, top-notch production,

This review is from: The Lettermen (Capitol Collectors Series) (Audio CD)
Throughout the 60's, the Lettermen continued to place singles and albums high onto the pop charts in spite of the assault of hard-edged, teenybopper and British invasion music during the era. The Lettermen's smooth harmonies supported by lush arrangements of new and reworked tunes earned them a diverse following among the music-buying public giving them the top billing for Adult Contemporary vocal groups of the 60's.This exceptional collection of their music has been around since 1992 and is one of the few in the suberb Capitol Collectors Series that is still available. Among the 23 tracks are most, with three omissions, of their top-100 singles along with a few b-sides and album cuts. While the hard-nosed collector may be put off by the exclusion of a few lower-charting singles, this collection provides an extraordinary sampling of the Lettermen's remarkable music from their first charting single in 1961 right up to their final chart appearance in 1971. Beyond the repertoire and generous track count, the listening experience here is further enhanced by the top-notch production with all cuts in stereo and having been taken from original session tapes and mixdown tapes. There is no finer single-disc collection of this quintessential vocal group available. If you will have only one Lettermen CD in your music collection, this is the one to have, bar none.

Capitol Collectors Series gives us this fine installment of great hits and ballads by The Lettermen. The Lettermen are definitely one of my very favorite groups from the 1960s and Capitol does great justice to them here with excellent sound quality and artwork. The album starts with "The Way You Look Tonight;" The Lettermen play with some of the key modulations and it works wonders for this classic love song. The Lettermen could take any song and put their own stamp on it with their incredible style; and "The Way You Look Tonight" is a perfect example of this. This is anything but elevator music! "When I Fall In Love" features The Lettermen singing very sweetly; and they harmonize to perfection as well. The musical arrangement is very lush and it complements The Lettermen very well. Great! "Turn Around, Look At Me" is easily a major highlight of this fine album; The Lettermen do this up right with style and grace and I'm very impressed. They handle tempo changes so well and the strings help to mark the best. The theme from A Summer Place also gets a royal treatment from this fine group; they perform this classic tune with heart and soul; and just one listen proves just how great this group really was. Listen also for The Lettermen to make good on "Sealed With A Kiss;" this gets a faster tempo than I'm used to but it still holds its own very well. "Sealed With A Kiss" is a highlight of this album. In addition, "I Only Have Eyes For You" sounds fresh and new again when these men sing it with all their hearts and soul; they croon this beautifully and the melody is very pretty. There's also a strong live medley of "Goin' Out Of My Head" and "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You;" the group enjoys a great rapport with their adoring audience. "Put Your Head On My Shoulder" is a very romantic tune that The Lettermen infuse with so much passion; this works well for this number. The strings also sound very good on "Put Your Head On My Shoulder." "Everything Is Good About You" has a `60s pop music flavor to it that makes this tune shine when The Lettermen sing it; and I really like "Everything Is Good About You." "Oh My Love" is a cover of a wonderful George Harrison tune; this would make George very proud! The album ends with a solid performance of "If You Feel The Way I Do" and it leaves you wanting more--excellent! The Lettermen were a wonderful, special group that moved the hearts of so many people; and their CDs still sell well today. I highly recommend this CD for their fans; and this is also a fine starter CD for people just getting to know the wonderful artistry of The Lettermen.

Oh, this is the one to have! It's the sound we remember. If you have forgotten how many hits this group had, just purchase this CD, it'll all come back to you. The sound quality is great, "The Way You Look Tonight" will zoom you right back to the sixties....as you twirl around in front of your mirror waiting for your Prom date to arrive! These fellows could really harmonize, and Capital has done a great job of putting their hits together on one CD for us.
