When I read this book, I need a few things... some strawberry lemonade, My bright pink pen for marking the passages I like... and no distractions. At first, the flowery form of the letters is distracting, but much like when you are read Shakespeare, after a few minutes, you adjust and the gems begin to surface. Here you see how much people remain the same across time. Example: the relationship between mothers and daughters is shown in this short letter that goes a little like this...

Traditional flowery opening
The message, "Mom, you don't need to worry. I'm okay."
Traditional flowery closing

Here you will read about a pharaoh who was so excited to hear a dwarf dancer who danced the "god's dances from the land of the horizon-dwellers" was visiting his court that he was almost doing cartwheels. Or a man who complains of a slow worker, "I have heeded what you told me, "let Ib work with you." Now look, he spends all day bringing a jug of water, there being no other task charged to him each and every day. ... See, the sun has set and he is still far off with the jug of water."

These are peeks into the thoughts and doings of the ancient Egyptians, letters that once you get past the flowery opening will make you laugh. You will feel sorry you are unable to help the plight of someone will lived thousands of years ago and your heart will melt at some of their kindnesses. But mostly you will marvel how people are the same no matter where or when they live. The letters are written by kings and ordinary men. Some have a follow-up, most do not. They are just snapshots frozen in time. But if you love Egypt, they are worth the effort to read.
