4.0 out of 5 stars Real-life Botswana beyond the game parks, February 10, 2004

This review is from: Letters from Botswana: A Peace Corps Odyssey (Paperback)
I really enjoyed Letters From Botswana -- the real-life story of a young middle-American soul encountering life in Africa up-close and personal via service in the Peace Corps. No literary gimmicks, no political correctness, no varnish, no nonsense. Just the author's acutely personal accounting to her family of what she encountered during her service.

What makes this interesting is not only the culture clash of idealistic-American vs. Botswana-way-of-life, but also the fact that the author has to deal, from afar, with profound family changes back in the states.

Having been a Silicon-Valley wage slave, I was impressed by the author's courage to "chuck it all" and head off into the unknown.

This is totally worth reading if you are:
a) considering "chucking it all" for the Peace Corps
b) going on a safari in any of the southern African countries
c) looking for the reality of life in Precious Ramotswe's country
d) wanting an adventurous escape into another world, another family
