Book for 4th Graders in California,

I am an older teacher new to 4th grade. I spent part of my summer looking for relevant books about California history for my classroom library. I purchased this book and found it to be an ok read but not great. My first reasons, has to do with the geography involved with this book. I know what and where the author is describing but most students have no clue. Second, the characters in this story are very mature and modern for the time in history in which this story takes place so it seems very unreal to me. It is in my classroom library but no one has picked it up.
