Recent poems by Daniela Crasnaru, the distinguished young Romanian writer, are here translated by well-known poet Fleur Adcock. This collection is revealing of the self-censorship and the anger experienced by Romanian intellectuals under the Ceausecu regime. Letters from Darknesss contrasts the subtle, allusive work Crasnaru published during that period, with a selection of the out-spoken, subversive poems she hid in her cellar until the revolution of Christmas 1989.
