Too predictable and trite for me. There were a few good spots, the best being in the very beginning of the book when Alzheimer's is so vividly described.

What an amazing book!!!! Recommended to me by a member of my Church, I was a bit skeptical about cracking the cover. To my delight, I fell in love with the book and the characters. Your heart begins to ache for poor Harry. You begin to well up with tears for Laura. You start getting angry at Bob. And you are excited for little Emily.

It starts out as a book about Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and its cruelty to those who are inflicted with it. AD is one of the worst because you watch your loved one wither away before you. AD steals the most important part of life...your memories -- then your body. It is, however, a book just about AD because as you are engrossed with the characters and the story, another problem begins to surface. What is it? Read the book and find out.

I highly recommended this book to all readers! As a Pastor, it will certainly have a place of prominence on my bookshelf. Truly a delight to read as well as a challenge to our lives. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

I read until three o'clock in the morning. I couldn't put it down. The best way to describe this book would be to say it's a cross between "Tuesday's With Morrie" and a Nicholas Sparks novel. It's not only full of fabulous wisdom about life, the story grabs you by the heart and won't let go. I was fascinated by the clues hidden in the poem and the grandfather's wisdom dispensed in each letter. And, the ending was a terrific surprise. I hope we see many more books from this author. Until then, Letter for Emily is my new favorite novel. Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Letters for Emily is Fabulous, January 12, 2002

I'm a huge fan of Mary Higgins Clark so when I read her endorsement on the cover, I bought the book. I was not disappointed. The book was excellent. The way the old man's poems weave into the story is fascinating. I found myself trying to solve the clues and figure each one out. Here's the best part - my husband who never reads picked it up and read it as well. And, he loved it. I look forward to many more books from this author. Keep writing!

I read it the first time in a day. Two days later I started it over again. There is so much wisdom and love in this book that everyone should read it at least twice! I laughed. I cried. I'll be giving it to all of my friends. Top of my list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Letters for Emily...it's a sweetheart, January 22, 2005
You'll need to keep a box of Kleenex close by when you read this tear-jerker. This book was among a few others that I found in a box of books in a basement. I knew by the book's size and large print that it would be a quick read, and that's what I was looking for, something quick to read. So I sat down and started, thinking this was going to be another one of those stories where the wife and husband are at odds and it will go from there. Well, that was somewhat true, but after learning that Harry's son, Bob, suffered from depression just like Harry, and he had sense enough to get tested and to save his marriage, well, I was simply thrilled by this little book. Love stories are supposed to have a happy ending, although life doesn't always coat it with pretty colors as we'd like. This story had a good ending, even though the years Bob could have shared with his father and didn't, had slipped away. IF Bob didn't feel the father-son relationship that most boys require when they are growing up, it was simply because Harry was sick and didn't know how to tell him...or express his emotions. So the old man, while failing in health and losing his memory, wrote his emotions in his Letters to Emily.
Grant it, I could see where this book did need an editor's touch, but when you're totally engrossed in a good story, you overlook that and keep reading. This must be Camron Wright's first attempt at writing, and he does remind me of Nicholar Sparks too. Regardless, I'm glad I had the chance to read this book and I highly recommend it to anyone, any age, in any given situation that requires good sound advice about trying to face life's problems. This is an excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book I've ever read, January 2, 2003

This review is from: Letters for Emily (Audio CD)
This is by far the best book I have ever read. I consider myself an avid reader. However I have never been touched by a novel as I have by Letters for Emily. This book is a quick read and you will not want to put it down. The tears will come so naturally because of the heart-felt emotions expressed by the grandfather who wrote the letters, and the reactions by his family members. After completing this book, I immediately looked for other books by Cameron Wright, but was unable to find others. I am eagerly awaiting the author's next novel. If you ever want to understand forgiveness and family love, this book will give you that experience. I would recommend this book to EVERYONE.

Occasionally, along comes a book that speaks to you on such a level that you are forever changed by its words, its message, its wisdom. In Letter to Emily, Camron Wright has created such a book. Its story captivates (I too read it in one sitting!), intriques, and inspires one to look at what is really important in life. It has touched my heart and soul and left indelible footprints there.

5.0 out of 5 stars A surprising homegrown delight, September 22, 2001
This review is from: Letters for Emily (Paperback)
I sometimes hesitate to read books written by local authors. With the success of "The Christmas Box", there has been a surge of locally published writers...sometimes,not all of them good. Camron Steve Wright's "Letters for Emily" has been on the top of my 'to be read ' pile for awhile and I finally picked it up this week. The story of a couple facing divorce as well as deciding what to do with an aging father,Wright has intertwined these two themes along with an another, older story based from the father's marriage and the mysterious journals and letters his family discovers. The letters are addressed to his granddaughter, Emily. Each letter adresses an ageless theme such as hope, loss, anger, pride, forgiveness and regret. As the old man writes about each of these, he speaks to his children through his letters as well as poems he wrote years ago, poems his children had no idea he had ever crafted. Each poem is the key to a long ago piece of their family history and unlocks the secret of their past and the sadness their father has carried all these years. As they begin to understand the man that was their father, they begin to understand themselves. "Letters to Emily" is not a cloyingly sweet story with a ready made ending. The characters are multifaceted and not manipulated by expectations. Camron Steve Wright has managed to craft a tender, yet strong story of the true power of forgivenes and reconcillation and hope. A wonderful first effort. I hope there are many more to follow.

4.0 out of 5 stars Puzzle in Poetry, October 20, 2002
This review is from: Letters for Emily (Hardcover)
An absolutely charming puzzle of poetry and story, reminiscent of Nicholas Sparks' The Notebook. This is a glimpse into the loving legacy of a grandfather who reaches out beyond Alzheimers, beyond depression, to comfort and counsel and to guide not only his granddaughter Emily, but to heal old wounds too. The wisdom of life experiences - absent the wounds, the shared history and the vanity devices we put in place. The presentation of the book of poetry and clues for Harry's story is a pure delight. Originally self published, a good editor might have insisted on a little more characterization and better dialogue, but the premise was artfully done. I heartily recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, October 24, 2005
Rather slow in the beginning but when you get to the part of the poems and secret passwords, you simply can't put the book down! Clever how the passwords are hidden in the poem. Skillful writing there...
