Book Description

Green Integer April 1, 2004

Ingeborg Bachmann (1926-1973) was one of the major writers of the 20th century: a poet who turned away from poetry, and a prose writer whose great project remained unfinished at the time of her death by fire. Letters to Felician came both chronologically and conceptually just before the fork in the road which divides Bach-mann’s career, making it an important document for reading her later work. Passionate declarations of love to a male figure, Felician, these fictional letters are also a hymn to the beauty of southern Austria, underlying Bachmann’s utopian visions of her later work.

About the Author

Bachman (1926-1973) was one of the great Austrian writers of the 20th century, a near legendary figure. She was romantically involved with the Swiss writer Max Frisch. In 1973 she fell asleep smoking a cigarette in bed and was badly burned, dying three weeks later. Translator

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Ingeborg, an Overlooked Masterpiece, and a nice companion piece with Emily Dickinson's "Master Letters", June 28, 2011
This review is from: Letters to Felician (Green Integer) (Paperback)
Ingeborg Bachmann is one of the all-time greats and finest poets to ever live to write in any language.
"Letters to Felician" is in a similar class and subject matter to Emily Dickinson's "Master Letters" and stands as an oft-overlooked masterpiece that also provides insight into better understanding and appreciating her latter work.
The English translator provides good notes explaining his decisions in organizing and translating the poems in this edition and also provides good historical contexts for the poems/letters.
A must-read for Ingeborg fans.
