Book Description

April 12, 2004
During the Civil War a Union soldier falls in love with a girl from a family with divided loyalties. His letters to her are the only surviving clues to his true identity. Now, his modern descendant (Kathy Evans) and her friend (Steve Knox) must take the letters and go on a desperate search for the truth in order to successfully claim an inheritance that is rightfully hers. Standing in their way is a corrupt estate lawyer unwilling to lose control of the trust fund. In the frequent flashbacks, James Franklin’s growing relationship with his sweetheart and her border-state family arouses the suspicions and animosity of John Watts, a jealous and vindictive fellow soldier. Following several confrontations, in which he blames Franklin for his failures, Watts becomes convinced that Franklin has been sending military intelligence to the Confederates by way of the letters. The story builds to a climactic confrontation over the letters.

This review is from: The Letters From Fiddler's Green (Paperback)
This book is a great summer read. Set around the Washington, DC area, both in modern day times and in the Civil War Time period, the author draws you into the search for clues to figure out how and where one special Civil War soldier navigated the battles and events of his day, mingling with some good, some bad, some he loved and a few he despised. Its a chase to beat the clock, as his modern day descendent's future hangs on the balance of being able to prove they were related, and that he had been in certain places at certain times. All they have to work with are a few letters and pictures, and some research skills. The book is sprinkled with facts about actual Civil War battles and events (some interesting, some quirky) and snippets of what living day to day was like back then. This added dimensions makes gives the book it's special flavor, and is a great way to gain a bit of an understanding of the civil war, - even if you are history-challenged like me. The author's fascination with the civil war time period and with research is contagious, all the while he's taking his reader on a good old fashioned chase for the stars. He makes me wish I had letters of my own from "Fiddlers Green... "
