4.0 out of 5 stars A great new start for Ruben March 13, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Finally, Ruben Studdard is making true music, away from the confines of American Idol and the big corporate labels. Going independent, it seems, has allowed him to be an artist and make virtually no concessions to the mainstream.

Like most pop artists, he was forced to take on commercial personas (gangsta of love, mainstream R&B singer trying to appeal to youths, or sappy, sentimental singer appealing to adult contemporary radio), that were completely in conflict with his skill sets.

Now, he's able to just sing good R&B/soul songs with little pressure to have hit singles or be in the constant rotation on big corporate radio.

He's turned in a very good album, and it truly feels like he's just getting started.

There's is no doubt that with this release Ruben has further developed his soulful, nuanced and thoughtful musical style which parallels in many respects, his personal joys and disappointments. Ruben, from his first CD years ago and through this new release, has continued a journey discovering himself musically. This CD in its progression from beginning to end shows how far Ruben has travelled in his musical life. The feeling, depth and clarity of real life have all found themselves in Ruben's voice in this music. Earlier attempts were only preludes to this carefully constructed musical offering. Ruben's further discovery of his voice incorporating personal feeling through his life's experiences is evident and appreciated.

3.0 out of 5 stars Still middle of the road April 5, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This album is "decent." Ruben is still lacking "that song" that will define his legacy as an artist. I've never heard anyone, other than Luther Vandross, who sounds better live. The fidelity in Ruben Studdards voice is unparalleled, but the lack of a major hit to characterize Ruben as an artist(i.e. Anthony Hamilton, Charlene) may forever allude him. Ruben's bass player, Alvin Garrett, is a wonderful song writer, but no songs penned by him have ever made the cut on a Ruben Studdard LP. I hate to see an artist with such a beautiful instrument not reach their full potential as a recording artist.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Newben Ruben Sandwich. March 19, 2012
Format:Audio CD
This cd didn't "BOOM--POW--WOW" me the way that I hoped, but I will say that Ruben brought his game and could teach quite a few of these new folks how to carry it in the singing department. This dude still has his voice and being on an independent label definitely didn't hurt either. Not bound by so many restrictions, Ruben did what he had to do and he did it well. As far as the sandwich reference, it's easy. Take one independent label who believes in you, add a serious voice and some great songs on whole soul bread, and there you have it....The Newben Ruben! Since I got the extra 4 songs, I'm guessing that was the chips to the meal, which were also tasty. A very commendable return for a commendable vocalist....GOOD WORK, BIG RU!

This in my opinion is hit in a long line of hits from one of my favorite while this album gives us a deepper look into Ruben Studdards personal life through song and may not have as many up beat singles it is still an album any Ruben Studdard fan can listen to and enjoy.

Well, I think the album sounds good overall. Not sure what happened with Ruben, but hate that his name doesn't carry as much of a punch as it used to.
