Book Description

“Let me tell you about the day I died.”

So begins the story of Roman citizen Aulus Aurelius who, along with his family, was murdered for his faith in AD 67. Since then he has observed Earth from Heaven and now writes these letters to the modern church. With unique insights on eternity, prayer, and the Kingdom of God, he will challenge today’s Christian to have intimacy with God in private and boldness before others in public.

Aulus tells of:

• A Vietnamese Christian who sifted through human waste in prison latrines for the Bible.
• An Eastern European orphan who died and changed history.
• A girl saved from suicide by through three simple words, “I love you.”

Letters From a Martyred Christian is page-turning fiction that will grip readers from the first sentence but also encourages practical application. It is designed with Christian discipleship classes, small groups, and book clubs in mind. Discussion questions for each chapter are included.

“Many nights I was unable to sleep. I would pace in our garden, staring at the stars and pleading with God. I had three requests: One, that I would remain faithful to the Gospel. Two, that if need be, I would die in a way that pleased Him. And three, that my wife and children would not suffer. Two of my requests were granted.”

While staying well within historic Christian orthodoxy, Hussmann provides plenty of imaginative fodder for the thoughtful Christian. Through the well-developed and believable character Aulus, the reader is offered a first-hand account of the afterlife, as well as sound advice on how to maintain a healthy view of reality. In his letters, Aulus provides a throne-side perspective of scripture, humility, the kingdom of god, suffering, and redemption, all in a smooth and engaging prose.

The book is at once provocative, challenging, and emotionally wrenching. Each chapter is short enough to be read in a single sitting, and each will inevitably spark further thought/discussion. Recommended for personal or large group devotional study, or just a good read on a plane. Primarily intended for a Christian audience, though non-Christian readers interested in the Christian worldview will benefit as well.

Letters From A Martyred Christian is an incredible work! I literally could not put it down. The stories drew me in and I couldn't wait to read more.

This book teaches one what it looks like to truly follow after Jesus, and challenges you to do more. The way in which it is conveyed draws you in and gets you excited.

Personally, I believe the best part of this book is that I came to know Jesus in a more intimate way and have a greater expectation for the life to come. It challenged me to seek after Him more and take the time to actually listen to what He is saying to me.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It's easy to read and has discussion questions for each chapter if you wanted to use it in a small-group setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be ready to be challenged! February 8, 2012

Letters From a Martyred Christian will compel you to reevaluate your own life in action, thought, or belief. Although a fast read, it is necessary to take some time to debrief after each chapter. I highly recommend Hussmann's book to anyone--there is something to consider for everyone!
