This book was recommended to me by a USAFA fellow athlete and I read it in one sitting. Although I never knew Derek, I'm also a "preppie" (1991) and USAFA (95) grad. Derek's story is very moving and I could see qualities in him similar to a lot of guys I graduated with in this narrative. The quality of men and women produced by the U.S. Air Force Academy (as well as the other service academies) is stunning. Derek makes me proud to be a USAFA graduate and proud to have served in the military. Do yourself a favor and read this book, you'll be inspired to be a better person.

I have known Derek Argel since the 4th grade. Needless to say I have known him on a personal level for a long time. In reading this book, I was enthralled from the first word to the last. It was nice to remember the good times we had as kids and young adults; all while giving Derek's son, Logan a glimpse of who is father is. While reading this book, I learned so much about the professional side of Derek that he couldn't (or wouldn't...he is so humble) share with me. His love for his friends, family, and country are spelled out well through the beautifully linked letters of his friends, family, and co-workers. This was a beautiful tribute from a mother to her grandson about her son who gave all for us to have the freedoms we have today. Logan will have a clear understanding of the hero is father was and always will be. To top it all off, all proceeds will benefit the Special Operations Warrior Foundation; a charity Derek supported in life.

These letters are intimidating with the awe and love people showered upon our fallen protector, Captain Derek Argel.

After digesting the first letters, I knew I was reading about an ace among the elite, and his death angered me. I must trust God's plan, but I see Captain Argel's death as an unconscionable loss of a national asset. If you read this book, you'll agree with me that you wished you had known him, and you'll feel cheated if you didn't.

Picture a powerful six and a half foot tall dynamo with a will of steel, a heart of gold, and a lifetime of wisdom. Picture him making leadership look easy among the nation's top officer candidates at the United States Air Force Academy, picture him exemplifying resiliency and strength among the nation's elite special forces, and picture him pouring love and compassion upon friends and family.

If you're perplexed and enticed by these apparent contrasting images, you'll want to pick up Letters for Logan and get to know Captain Derek Argel. Reading his memoirs may sadden you or anger you, but it will ignite a spark in you to be a better version of you.

The author did a really great job of weaving together the life of an amazing man, through personal letters to his son left behind. It is an incredible tribute to the life of a hero. Anyone who reads it will be motivated by the exceptional courage and dedication in a life that was ultimately cut too short.

If "Letters for Logan" were an autobiography written by Derek Argel, the book would be very short. Derek was a humble young man. Through his family, friends, team mates, classmates and coworkers' letters to his young son Logan, we learn of Derek's resolve to become an outstanding water polo player and swimmer in high school and college, a good student in the classroom as well as in life, a worthy, patriotic, results-focused soldier serving his beloved country and a loving son, grandson, brother, husband and father. His boyish antics and humorous words as described by those who knew him were balanced by his "determination, drive and heart". He was serious and committed once his purpose was defined and those closest to him shared how he impacted them by his single-mindedness that was filled with energy, enthusiasm and tenacity. While the book cover shows a bigger-than-life, confident, prepared-for-any-situation Special Operations Warrior, the words inside tell simply of one man's hopes, dreams, hard work, achievements and ultimate sacrifice during his too short life. I believe there have been many Dereks and "Letters for Logan" gives a voice to who those lost-but-not-forgotten soldiers were by those who loved them. Thank you, Debbie, for sharing your labor of love.

Both moving and inspiring... Definitely new professional military education material for new leaders. An incredible example of a true, modern patriot. Thanks for sharing these letters.

I received my hard copy of Letters for Logan on a Saturday afternoon, and finished it by Sunday. It was a touching collection of letters that were compiled together by his mom, Debbie. I was concerned that I would get confused by the format, not have having seen Derek (except once in 1999) since we were children. I also remember spontaneously visiting Momo in 2007, seeing her Gold Star hanging in the window, letting myself in, already bawling over knowing it had to be one of the Argel Boys. Debbie did an excellent job of organizing the letters and further explaining the memories of those who loved him in such a way that you didn't have to know Derek personally or be privy to the stories previously to understand and appreciate the memory. Logan is so blessed to have 2 fathers and the family and friends that surrounds both of these "Good Dudes." Reading this book, moved me deeply. I am so proud of Derek, Wendy and the entire Mears clan. God Bless you all.
