This review is from: Letters to and From Mr. Pope (Paperback)
This short novel is a bitterly, blackly comic excursion into a kind of horror that doesn't get treated very often: the simple despair of living a normal life. A middle-aged man is nudged toward a clandestine program that allows men of means to "die" and be surgically altered so as to begin a new life as someone else-- someone younger and without all the baggage that a life of acquisition and bourgeois striving has accumulated. Speaking as a middle-aged man: sounds great, right? Right?
Well, no. Ely does a brilliant job of getting inside the head of a bright but burned-out executive who decides-- sort of-- to undergo this transformation. This novelette is simple and brilliant, and belongs with other masterpieces of the form like Kosinski's "Being There" and "Steps." The 60s film "Seconds" is also worth seeking out-- it's a fairly faithful adaptation directed by John Frankenheimer that strikes most of the right notes and stars Rock Hudson (!) as the rejuvenated executive. He's surprisingly good.
