Book Description

December 5, 2004
Letters From My Sister began with a simple letter about a bad job interview or a bad hair day, seeking comfort from hundreds of miles away. One letter plus its response became two, two became four, and four became one hundred and twenty over the course of a year in which Faye approaches college graduation in Chicago while Eve establishes her career in New York City.

Through their correspondence, the Ledermans relate stories and reveal secrets in a way that only sisters can—with a raw openness and honesty derived from a lifetime of shared experiences that surpasses the bond of best friends. By exposing their foibles and fears, each reveals glimpses of real life, both silly and serious.

While their stories are personal, the book’s themes are universal and offer perspective on larger issues. The sisters confront their femininity, but they are not confined by it; rather, they use it as a prism to critique many aspects of modern society. As the authors trade beauty secrets and hair removal nightmares, they simultaneously criticize the social construction of female beauty and laugh at themselves for buying into it. Faye finds a Russian waxing woman who nearly renders her bald, and Eve tracks down the eccentric inventor of the "Tweezerman" that is "so precise it can pluck in the dark." Gender roles, career choices and family relationships are all fair game, subject to intense scrutiny, and as a result, hilarity.

With a biting sense of humor, the Ledermans laugh long and hard at both their successes and failures. They learn to love their silly, imperfect and often self-absorbed selves, enticing readers to do the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Run for the Hills, Bridget Jones!, February 1, 2005
This review is from: Letters From My Sister: On Love, Life and Hair Removal (Paperback)
This wonderfully piquant and witty book would be worth the price for its humor alone, but its filled with insight into the relationship between the authors and, hilariously at times, their men. Women from every walk of life will have no trouble seeing themselves in these two amusing sisters who write with a knowing candor. And men who want to "get" women should read this as if it were a training manual. They'll learn a lot about the way we think. And think we do as the Lederman sisters so ably demonstrate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sisters only? Not quite., February 1, 2005

This review is from: Letters From My Sister: On Love, Life and Hair Removal (Paperback)
If you think this is a book only for sisters, think again. Warmth, conviviality and joie de vivre galore, this is your chance to re-establish "female bonding" with all your girl friends.

At once amusing and poignant, reading this book reminds you of late nights and popcorn, pajama parties and laughing over the men in your life with a gaggle of friends. Slip into your cozy slippers and get your phone within reach. "Letters" is one book you are going to want to read to your best friend from.

Eve Lederman's book "Letters From My Sister" is a lovingly illuminating work that pulls no punches and rings true to the heart. As I read "Letters From My Sister" I felt instant love and incredible stimulation from the author's wickedly insightful observations about life, men and relationships. Eve Lederman's book carries us on a wild headlong plunge into her life as she relates the incredibly funny and intensely felt experiences of the Lederman sisters. I highly recommend this book for anyone seeking a breathtaking ride through the emotionally volatile maze of New York life by a knowing and gracefully gifted writer.
