This review is from: Letters of Robert G. Ingersoll (Hardcover)
Robert Ingersoll is not too well know today, but between the Civil War and his death in 1899 was among the USA's greatest orators, humanists, writers, lawyers, and rationalists. Originally a Democrat, he became a strong Republican during the Civil War, especially after the Emancipation of 1862. A heroic officer at Shiloh, he later became known as the "Great Infidel" for his many controverial speeches and writings on the superstitions, dogmas, and anti-science of Chritianity. The concept of hell was for this man totally immoral, and he wanted to liberate us all form the petty fighting and bickering of religious dogma. He said simply that the concept of God and everything that went with it is simply untrue, unverifiable, and bogus. Even though he alienated many, his good spirit and personal generosity trumped his opponents, and even many ministers were among his admires. This volume includes his many letters intersparced with his life story, and shows him for the true hero that he is/was. Very similar to England's TH Huxley, though Ingersoll was not a scientist with the scientist's credentials. As a "Progressive Republican" (a concept totally alien to today's world; a true oxymoron) his life was dedicated to truth, liberty, happiness, and fair play. Is there any one in public life today like Robert Ingersoll? Surely no one of his fame, eloquence, and influence!
