Book Description

July 2003
Seabiscuit was a nation's treasure. The 1920s may have been the Golden Age of Sports with Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey among others dominating the scene but during the mid to late 1930s, one sports legend gave resolve and enjoyment to a nation emerging from the Great Depression. Seabiscuit was that sporting icon. The story of Seabiscuit as told so eloquently by Laura Hillenbrand has dominated the book scene for two years. Seabiscuit, Charles and Marcela Howard, Tom Smith, Red Pollard, and George Woolf have once again become a part of our national conscience. Now comes another gift. In 1975, Barbara Howard received from her great aunt, Marcela Howard, a box of letters written to Seabiscuit and his owner Charles Howard. Some were letters of congratulations, a suggested name for a foal, a birthday card, or a valentine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Window to Yesteryear, August 20, 2003

This review is from: Letters to Seabiscuit (Paperback)
Through printing exact reproductions - many handwritten - of the fan mail to the Howard family and Seabiscuit in 1939-40, a unique glimpse into the lives and attitudes of America is shown. The content of the letters, notes, and poems is fascinating, and made moreso by being able to view it in the original format - including the stationery, stamps and envelopes.

It's a very enjoyable read. I loved it! Thanks, Ms. Howard, for sharing your family's collection with us.

After reading and admiring Laura Hillenbrand's book, and seeing the movie, I was eager to learn more about the world's response to Seabiscuit during his lifetime. These letters illuminate the feelings he evoked in people.

5.0 out of 5 stars To Honor An Equine Hero, February 10, 2008
This review is from: Letters to Seabiscuit (Paperback)
This is a beautiful book on so many levels.

There are points in time when a Thoroughbred captures the imagination of a nation and Seabiscuit had that rare quality of being a champion on and off the track. And with this celebrity came fan letters and accolades that are actually so personal in nature.

The letters featured in the collection are photographed, so the reader has the feeling of being with the Howard Family as they opened the mail for the first time. A unique tribute to the memory of The Biscuit, the material etches a strong impression on what the racer meant to so many people, young and old.
