Book Description

May 15, 2000 Records of Western Civilization Series

St. Boniface, the early eighth-century English cleric who became known as "Apostle to the Germans," was an important agent in the conversion of the North German tribes from paganism to Christianity. His efforts were devoted as well to organizing and concentrating all of Germanic Christendom under the leadership of Rome. He numbered among his correspondents the popes as well as colleagues in England, France, and Rome. His letters provide unique insights into the religious, ecclesiastical, political, and social history of early medieval Europe.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A rich source of information and opinion on a great variety of matters in the Frankish kingdoms under Charles Martel and Pippin (grandfather and father of Charlemagne) that offers a rare opportunity to get the personal view of someone living in the early medieval period. -- Rosamund McKitterick, Cambridge University

The Letters of St. Boniface constitute perhaps the single most important body of texts dealing with the English missions to the continent in the eighth century, as well as a fine window onto the mind of eighth-century Europe. -- Edward Peters, University of Pennsylvania

5.0 out of 5 stars Insights into the mind of an early missionary, October 9, 2002

This review is from: The Letters of St. Boniface (Paperback)
This book is a fascinating collection of personal letters to and from an 8th century English missionary turned bishop, working on the edge of pagan Germany, as he sought and received counsel from friends, popes, and bishops. Initially, his letters reflect a man seeking to know what the rule is, and expecting others to live by the rules. On a deeper level, the letters reflect Boniface's deep honesty, frustration, and dedication to his work in churches plagued by pagan and heretical influences. Weeks after I finished this book, individual incidents Boniface confronted came to mind. The letters inform about eighth century culture. They share the thoughts of a dedicated man trying to do the right thing in a difficult era.
