4.0 out of 5 stars Get off their back
We all know they don't even come close to the talent and originality of TOOL and APC so quit writing the same reviews dissing this band.

As far as I'm concerned, as long as someone out there is producing something other than rap/rock in this time of blah music I say more power to them even if they are heavily influenced by a successful band.

OK, let's get this out of the way, since every reviewer acknowledges this part. Earshot are not the Tool wanna-bes/rip-offs other people would lead you to believe. For one thing, Tool are way more experimental (and musically gifted) than these guys would ever WANT to be and the lyrical content is a whole different side. Don't listen to people who say you arent a true TOOL fan by pickin up this CD. You think Maynard really cares that you have his CD's and this one in the same CD cartridge? Trust me, he doesn't. Don't let anyone tell you what not to listen to. If you like a rif or singer in a song cuz it reminds you of an awesome band and it makes you feel good crank it up in front of all of those "true" fans.

This CD is not the best out there and probably wont last that long in the CD player...but there are definately some catchy tunes that you will enjoy.

First of all I would like to say that I am blown away by how good this cd is. When I picked it up I expected a mediocre cd, but this is much better. ... Well, let me tell you something, this band not only has its own sound but it is way better than some of those bands that "push you one step closer to the edge". The people who say Earshot is unoriginal need to find something else to complain about. Their are millions of bands that have a sound that isn't completly original. Earshot has some toolesque sounds but they also have some very individual riffs and even a solo or two. If you like and rock and especially Tool this Cd belongs in your collection.

ok, so the one song they played on the radio could have been mistakend for tool. big deal, when I got this cd, I knew it wasn't tool, and surprise, it doesn't sound like tool. it sounds like they have tool's influence, but so what? People used to think that tool was heavily influenced by pink floyd. doesn't change the fact that they made their own unique sound. Earshot is a decent band, as far as modern rock bands go. if you like the tool-style, or actually rock in general that has deep lyrics, you'll like letting go. the only problem i had with it is that it got a little repetitive, but other than that, it's got a few nice songs on it that are worth listening to- ...

4.0 out of 5 stars A spark that could grow, June 10, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Letting Go (Audio CD)
I bought this CD a year ago because this guy said they sounded just like Tool. I personally didn't hear much of a similarity except the vocalist utilizes a consistent vocal melody that Maynard uses. Basically meaning the guy has probably memorized every Tool song vocally and that had an influence on how he chooses to go from note to note when writing his vocal melodies for his songs. His voice otherwise doesn't even compare to Maynard's, this guys voice is very breathy and when recorded in the studio they obviously doubled his voice over (which is commonly done for singers who have a weak voice or for an effect).
Anyway, the point I'm trying to get across is that although this band is a little repetitive at times, I have been anticipating their next release since I bought this because I know they will sound a lot better as they mature musically. Just because of some really cool and innovative breaks that they have in their songs that lead into the bridge. Like on track number 6 for instance, after the second chorus it goes into this orchestral break that seems to come out of nowhere, but it sounds so cool and it has such a great build up to the bridge. I just have this feeling that their next album will be considerably better than their first album. I could be very wrong though. But I agree with the others 100% about the song structure lacking in complexity compared to Tool. I can tell the singer is influenced by Tool, but I don't believe they are trying to sound like Tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Earshot-Music to My Ears, May 7, 2002

Finally the much awaited release of "Letting Go" proves to be one of the best new music releases of this year! This album features strong riffs and powerful lyrics, a combination that undoubtedly will leave you feeling Earshot's energy and motivation. Favorite tracks include-Unfortunate, Ordinary Girl, and Not Afraid, though every song has it's unique style and mood elements. "Letting Go" is a rock album that presents itself with powerful vocals and lyrics to accompany the already mesmerizing flow of the guitars and percussion. This is one rock album you can listen to and appreciate the minute you put it in your cd player!

I am always looking for good rock music, and I picked up this CD based on a recommendation. I'm very glad I did. This band has a hard/grunge sound, but with a melody. I have never heard this band on the radio, but they deserve to be. I love the guitar, the strong vocals with intelligent and clear lyrics, and the drums too. Each song sounds different, and some of the songs are quite catchy. This band is just as good or better than many of the more well-known CD's that you hear and read about. If you want to make a new discovery, this is a good one to try.

The vocals are about the only thing in common with Tool, and especially on "Get Away," they could be mistaken as Keenan's vocals to the untrained ear. However, despite the blatant unoriginality, 'Letting Go' is still a solid album. Unlike Tool, this is an album you can put on and LITERALLY let go. It's simple, it's straight-forward, and it rocks. The album goes through many highs and lows, but gets off to a wonderful kickstart with the energetic and catchy anthem "Headstrong." "Not Afraid" is probably the best track on the CD, a song about abandonment and desperation, which is executed wonderfully. I must've listened to this song about a thousand times by now. Some of the tracks are just plain boring ("Ordinary Girl"), but really, it is what it is. If you've heard one song on this CD, you've heard the whole thing. And despite the Tool comparisons, they are not trying to make any sort of artistic expression. I recommend buying or even burning it. I bought it almost a year ago and it still gets spins from time to time. Just don't expect the best album of 2002.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tool, no. Great album, yes., March 12, 2003

Earshot has the sound of tool. Wil from Earshot sounds very similar to Maynard of Tool. But i would never mistake them for Tool, being the Tool fanatic i am. I heard of Earshot from a music network on digital cable, heard they had influences from Tool and decided to check them out. "letting go" is an excellent album if your into Nu-metal or alternative rock. I wouldnt buy this album if your expecting Tool in every aspect because thats just not possible. Earshot is definetly not as musically enhanced or cerebral as Tool, but is definetly a great band to check out and to listen to. In my opinion, Earshot would be a great opening band or co-tour band for Tool. Much better than Meshuggah was on the "inside the outside" tour (speed metal isnt my thing). If your friends are telling you that your not a real Tool fan if you listen to Earshot, they are dead wrong. Music is music, and all music is good. All bands have to have a few influences, and Earshot's influence happened to be Tool. All in all, Earshot is a well worth cd to buy (or to burn)

I gave this cd a very generous rating before and have sinsed realized that it actually isn't as great as I stated. WHile this cd does have it moments it does sometimes feel like you're listening to a track you've already heard before. See for yourself.

i found out about Earshot here at Amazon, and since all the reviews were all about them sounding so much like Tool (one of my favorite bands ever), i decided i'd take a listen to it.

i absolutely LOVED it, and i think i would have anyway, even if i didn't know Tool... it's heavy, it has melody, vocals are well balanced.... seems to be a fair alternative to rock theses days.

i tried not to compare them with Tool, and i actually couldn't, most of the times. vocals do sound a lot like Maynard's, but lyrically and musically, i found it overall quite different.

"misery" could easily be mistaken for a (great) Tool song, but that's about it.
