What is Twilight Factor?
The factor that has the greatest impact on resolution or image detail, will be dependent upon the amount of light available during the time of observation. During daylight hours, when your eye pupil size will be only about 2 to 3mm, magnification will be the principal factor in image resolution. At night, with the eye pupil dilated to 6 to 8mm, aperture size is the controlling factor. In twilight conditions both of these factors control resolution effectiveness and the twilight factor is the term that compares binocular performance under these conditions.

The twilight factor is calculated by taking the square root of the product of the magnification and the aperture. The higher the twilight factor, the better the resolution of the binocular when observing under dim light conditions. For example, a 10 X 40 (twilight factor 20) would effectively resolve better under these conditions than a 7 X 35 (twilight factor 15.4) even though the 10 X 40 has a smaller exit pupil. Remember, however, that the twilight factor does not take into account the transmittance or quality of the optical system.

3.0 out of 5 stars If you want a bit more reach......, February 1, 2010

This review is from: Leupold Gr 10-20X40Mm Compact Spotting Scope Brown 61080 (Sports)
I purchased this scope to get more reach than my 8X binoculars and my telephoto camera lens while out shooting wildlife, mainly birds. It is light and not much longer than a pair of binoculars. The exterior is rubberized. I wear it around my neck on a lanyard barely noticing it is there. I think the optics are above average overall though they might appear better on a tripod or at least a monopod. Once I get out around 15-20X I find it difficult to stabilize the image unless I lean on something like my camera monopod. This may be more of a problem for me than others. I also find the side focusing knob a little more awkward than I thought I would mainly because I am right handed. I am getting more use to focusing with my left hand. The focus knob and the zoom mechanism are stiff but I suspect this is related to the waterproofing. With this scope I can identify birds that I cannot with my 8X binoculars without carrying a bigger spotting scope so I'd say it does what I wanted it to do. I am quite satisfied with this purchase. Better ergonomics and I would have given it 4 stars at least.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fits my hand., November 19, 2010

This review is from: Leupold Gr 10-20X40Mm Compact Spotting Scope Brown 61080 (Sports)
I wanted something compact to carry for deer hunting and the optics in the small binoculars are such poor quality. When I saw the other reviews for this compact spotting scope I thought it was worth taking a look at. I have a hard time seeing out of binoculars because I only wear one contact for correction for distance in my left eye so my brain has adjusted to monovision. In otherwords, I use my left eye to see faraway and my right eye to read. The spotting scope was just what I needed. It is so clear when I look through it and I love how it fits my hand. It comes with an elastic strap so my hand fits snuggly around it. I am excited to use it this hunting season and will keep it in my vehicle year around for bird-watching or checking the cows in the pasture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mixed opinion, changed how we use it, January 6, 2011
This review is from: Leupold Gr 10-20X40Mm Compact Spotting Scope Brown 61080 (Sports)
My wife and I (birders) got this when they first came to market (2002 or so?). We used it some hand held which worked to some extent at various powers. However, we already had Canon IS binos so were used to the stable image obtained with them so we didn't find this scope compelling hand held. We put it on a mono-pod which my wife already used as a hiking stick and it was then more usable. Even so, the IS binos always trumped this scope so it effectively went to storage. Fast forward to early 2010. We bought a Kowa TSN-883 Prominar ED 88mm spotting scope and soon found it difficult to "find" the desired subject because of the angled eyepiece. The "finder" line cast into the side of the shade was nearly useless for aligning on a subject, not the least of which was having to bend down and try to move the scope while feeling nearly off balance. Then there was the problem of dominant eye ... I am "left" eyed ... plus my neck injury ... solution needed.

The languishing Leupold scope captured my eye when rummaging through our photo equipment and it seemed it could be used as a finder scope for the Kowa. With a bit of planing, some aluminum, the tools at hand, and a couple hours of work, I built a mount that holds the Leupold above the Kowa. It is sized so that the eyepiece of the Leupold is in the same arc as the eyepiece of the Kowa, so a simple tilt of the head moves the eye from one scope to the other. The mounts are all Manfrotto quick-release and are positioned so the center of the Leupold at 10x is aligned with the center of the Kowa at 60x. Now, we just pan the Leupold to center on the desired subject and the Kowa is immediately "on point" without any hassle. See photo on the Amazon product page.

This scope is what I consider to be an "in-between" optic. It does not offer much more power than good zoom binos. It has enough power that hand-held use is too "jiggly." It is reasonably usable on a mono-pod while all but the most lightweight tripod is overkill. And, it is simply short-sighted in power compared to "grown up" scopes. That having been said, this is a high-quality scope; well made, great optics. Perhaps using it as our finder scope for the Kowa may be classified as "under-kill" but it does the job with aplomb ... and using it for this purpose is better than in languishing in effective storage.

I don't recommend buying one to use as we are now using it. I do suggest its best "normal" use is mounted on a mono-pod.
