Playing Time - 44:14 -- The sonic alchemy of the Eli Young Band transforms an eclectic variety of folk, country, metal, grunge, and rock influences into their own high-grade gold. Based in Texas, the band is poised to build their legion of fans throughout the region, then nationally and internationally. The opener, "Small Town Kid," is a ballad about having a simple story, being driven by rock and honky-tonk music and needing nothing more than a good-looking lady, a truck and some occasional whiskey or tequilla. All twelve songs on "Level" are originals written by the band that is fronted by the guitarists and vocalists Mike Eli and James Young. The rest of the group is Chris Thompson (drums) and Jon Jones (bass). Like Young, Jones also contributes background vocals. Guest artists include Milo Deering (pedal steel), Erik Herbst (guitars), Vince Barnhart (vocals), and Tommy Young (Hammond B-3 organ).

Hailing from Denton, Texas, the quartet has the potential to make some significant impact on the alt-country rock market. Their material addresses some common themes -- love, heartache, pain, loss and desperation. Circumspect, yet still deliberate, each song seems to take a life of its own. Many are full of sadness or despair, and I wouldn't mind hearing a few more happy, uplifting songs from them. "When It Rains" suggests that if you "start out depressed then everything comes as a pleasant surprise."

The title cut, "Level," doesn't appear until track five, and has a catchy melodic guitar riff and snappy bass line as Eli sings "waiting on life to level, waiting on something stable, maybe soon I'll be able, to rest my head again." The improvisational jamming that takes place at the end of the song kicks butt.

I stumbled on this. I had forgotten the few songs they had on the radio. They're voice is one that I can relate to. lisening to the previews on they're latest selftitled cd I decided to give them a try and downloaded it. I'd say thats the one to get if your interested. The songs on here will either get you singing along or at least tapping to the rythem. If you like singers who go their own way this is a treat. Yes you do have to like groups that give even slow songs a faster beat.

I am a country music fanatic and love country music. This is one of the very few bands that I can say when you put this cd in your player it will not be coming out for a long time. Every song on this cd is amazing and there is no way I could pick just one song because they are all great. This band was made to sing music its what they were born to do. The way their songs, voices, and instruments come together is just perfect. If I could only own one cd for the rest of my life it would be this cd without a hesitation. I have owned this cd now for about 4 years and it always finds its way back into my cd player. It doesnt just sit on my shelf like some of the other ones I own. There is something about this cd I never get tired of listening to it no matter how many times I have heard it. They go from twangy country with the slide guitar to rock and back and forth so the music is all mixed up and I think that is why the cd is so great. This is the one band I think that doesnt get enough music credit because like Taylor Swift and other pop style singers no offense; however, the Eli Young Band is country music and sounds like country music. They remind me of how country music sounded in the 80's with a mix of todays country music and not all the pop sound. My favorite cd by far even after 4 years of owning it.

Not a single bad song on the entire CD.

I have an entire mix of Eli Young now, including Level, Jet Black & Jealous, and Life at Best. FANTASTIC!
Can't wait for the next album.
