Probably the best post-punk alternative folk rock,
By Alejandro "new_fad" (New Jersey, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Levelling The Land (Audio CD)
The Levellers are huge in Europe but unfortunately not very known in America. Levelling the Land is an awesome album with great lyrics and a very original music approach. The sound is definitely electric, enriched by folk sounds of the accoustic guitar and the fiddle with an edge on hard rock. Songs like One Way of Life, The Boatman, 15 Years, Liberty Song are proof of it, however I would say this album has no bad track. There is anger, passion, love and hope in their music. I have all albums and most of singles and EPs from The Levellers and all are just great, however if you are new to their sound this is the best CD to start with. This is simply good rock, you won't be dissapointed.

Until the Levellers' most recent album, Mouth to Mouth, this was their greatest work. They polished some of the raw talent shown in their two previous albums and came up with a winner. It includes some memorable songs, combining both sensational music and singing and also a clear political message. 'The Road' and 'Fifteen Years' are just two of the better songs, but their greatest ever appears here, 'Another Man's Cause'. A wonderful indictment of war and its effects on young people, the Levellers improvement can be seen in its comparison with 'The Ballad of Robbie Jones'. A wonderful CD, and one to buy for fans of good music and a good political message alike. Thank you to the Levellers.

Well worth the time...,

If a person was to have just one Levellers album in their collection, it should be this one. While the lyrics on the album are definitely political, its the outstanding tunes that accompany them that truly sell the record. While Americans may appreciate the lyrics of 'One Way', 'Fifteen Years', etc., we may not have the same perspective as those in the UK. It doesn't mean that people on these shores will be at a loss for 'getting' the album. The Levellers are wonderful musicians. Do yourself a favor and take a chance on something you know is good for you!

I bought this CD back in '92 after hearing "One Way" on the radio. There just is not one bad track on it. It remains one of my favorites in my (somewhat voluminous)collection. The lyrics are 'Political', but the music is so good, that has never really irritated me. Buy this CD!I was listening to it, and on impulse jumped on to Amazon to check out some other titles. I bought two more and left this review. Convinced yet?

Ben L is absolutely in the right--this is the best Levellers record prior to Mouth to Mouth. Every song inspires...if this record isn't already imprinted on your grey matter, do yourself and your fellow human beings a favor and buy it now. And then buy a few more Levellers records.

I feel that this is album every Levellers fan should have in his home. From the joy of 'Far From Home' to the anger and sadness on 'Battle of the Beanfield' this is a truly majestic album that brings into view all that is wrong with the world and the fact that if we want to we can really do something and that it can really make a difference.

This album was my introduction to the Levellers and immediatly started my obsession with the band. There is no other album that I know of that can boast a line up of songs without a single weak link. All the tracks on this album are excellent and you will find that each one will take a turn at being you're favorite. The album also transcends the emotional barrier with some tracks using pure energy to blast you're mind, and others being ballads with a simple but powerful message. Must be heard to be believed. Do yourself a fovour and buy this album now, but be warned, it could change your life!! P.S. Catch them live if you can but be sure to drink plenty of water.

I bought this on a whim some years ago when it first came out because I liked the song, "One way of Life" and was quickly surprised and pleased by other songs that keep a traditional and passionate style of music, lyric and melody: Such as;"The Boatman",Far from Home,Another Man's Cause,The Riverflow and Battle of the Beanfield". Great political themes and I think even if you aren't "political" you will like this music! Highly reccomended, especially if you like British artists! Maija Murphy
