I ordered the Leviton 6652-1W variable countdown switch from Amazon LLC in August 2010. My application for this was a closet light in a child's bedroom. I had two reasons for wanting a countdown timer switch for the closet light: (1) reduce the risk of fire when the house is unoccupied, and (2) save energy.

This model appealed to me because other switches (such as the Leviton LTB30-1LZ, and Lutron MA-T51-WH) allow the user to vary the countdown time by pushing various buttons on the "console" (the face of the switch). The Leviton 6652-1W switch has a pop-out "faceplate", which is the Decora-style rocker switch portion of the console. The preset countdown time for the 6652-1W is specified using a rotary dial that is hidden behind the rocker-switch faceplate. A small flat-blade screwdriver is all you need to rotate the dial. Because the choice of preset time takes place "behind the scenes", that is, behind the faceplate, both the operation of this switch and its outside appearance are very simple. The preset time is "set and forget", which is nice for a child's room, because I don't want my child fiddling with the preset time on the console.

The Leviton 6652-1W switch works as follows: choose the preset time in advance and pop the rocker switch faceplate into place. To turn on the light, press the rocker switch once. While the light is turned ON, a small red LED (centered directly above the rocker switch) lights up on the console. A few seconds before the preset time is reached, the red LED blinks, and unfortunately a loud & obnoxious "BEEP BEEP BEEP" is emitted. When the preset time is reached, the light turns off, the red LED turns off, and the beeping stops. To turn the light off early (before the preset time is reached) simply tap the rocker switch two times.

Initially looked liked a good product as the settings are invisible to the user. I Had 2 units installed by an electrician to control bathroom fans but both timers were not performing - they either did not work at all or stopped the fan after random time period regardless of the settings. For example, if you set to 1 minute, it stops after 5 minutes; if you set to 5 minutes, it stops after 15 minutes; if you set to 15 minutes, it works continuously.

Ordered another one as I thought the first two were defective, but ended up with the same inconsistent operation. Called the manufacturer and all they could say is that I need a good Neutral, which I know that I had.
I'm not an expert, but the internal assembly seems to be with low quality, obsolete design and components used 20 years ago. In addition, there is an annoying buzzer when it getting close to the end of the cycle (if it ever does).

Bottom Line: Waste of time and money. Save the frustration and go with the Lutron MA-T51 which does not need a Neutral, accurate, reliable and have modern internal design and much better assembly quality.

I bought three of these timers, and they are all broken. They'll turn on, but never turn off. As the long and helpful review says, you need a good connection to neutral for these to function. I went so far as to remove a gfi from the circuit to make sure I had a no interruptions in my neutral. Still didn't work. So I went even further, and strung a wire all the way from my neutral bus in the breaker box to the neutral wire at the switch. Still didn't work. (Would turn on, but never turn off.)

I tried this setups with fewer and fewer potential problems (switched from a combo shower fan + florescent light to just the light, to just a single incandescent bulb. Still turns on and never turns off.

Tried these combinations on all three switches. None works. What a waste of a day.

Save yourself the trouble.

I had 6 of these installed when my house was built. Five of them failed in various ways and were replaced within a month, and 3 of those in turn failed and were replaced within another 3 months. Three years later, one more failure and 6 months later one more. Says it all. I'm trying the Lutron MA-T530GHW, which has no annoying beeping at the end of the cycle and requires only one tap to turn off manually; hope springs eternal.

Caveat: I did not purchase these through Amazon. Amazon has always been good for me.

My employer recently had me install about fifty-five (55) of these timer switches at an apartment-style complex to control the bathroom light and fart-fan.

I'd say that 30% of these gave me intermittent operation problems, or didn't necessarily turn on or off as desired, and 10% didn't work AT ALL.

For many of the timers, I had to bang on them to get them to come on the first time or two. For others, no amount of "pursuasion" would bring them on. I set all timers to the 30-minute "off" setting, and many were running hours after their pre-set off-time.

Upon installation, when one wouldn't work I was able to immediately install another in its place (since I had plenty of switches), and "voila" ---the new one works. I did occasionally try to re-install the previously-presumed "bad" switch, and was only once able to get any of them to function.

EDIT: Our application was to control flourescent light/bath fan combination. I now understand this switch is not rated for flourescent lights. The back of the packaging states "500W Tungsten"---which in english means: 'use with incandescent bulbs only'. There is also a small engraving on the inside-left of the switch which does read "INCANDESCENT LIGHTING". These letters are about 1/16 inch high.
I have raised my rating from one star to two stars as perhaps neither our electrical-parts supplier nor my project manager performed due-diligence when researching the application of this switch for this installation.

I would encourage previous reviewers to state whether their initial application was attempting to control flourescent lighting loads.

The manufacturer commented on this review(What's this?)
We regret your dissatisfaction but would have recommended a different product for the application you have described such as the LTB30 timer for applications controlling a light/bath fan combination and was designed toward higher amperage and motor load control.

Sorry for any inconvenience.
