This is an electronic timer switch that plugs into a 3-prong U.S. electric outlet. The unit plugs into the wall, and the prongs are located on the back of the unit. You can then plug any 2 or 3-pronged electrical device (such as a lamp) into the bottom.

The timer allows you to set up to 100 different on/off periods, which you can program on a particular day of the week, during the weekend, during the workweek, or everyday. You can program the timer to start or end a time period based upon the time of day or based upon the sunset or sunrise time in a particular location, and can even program it to offset from that time, i.e. 30 minutes before sunset.

The timer includes a wired remote control which you can press to turn the switch on and off. If you press the remote and release it promptly, it will toggle the load on or off and then continue with whatever timers you set. If you hold the remote button, it will toggle the load and override the timers until you push the button again.

Another review on Amazon indicates that the wired remote is not useful unless you can see the display, but I have not found that to be correct. Nothing on the display gives any useful information relating to the use of the remote. You simply push the button and the attached light turns on and push it again to turn the light off. It is possible that an older firmware version of this remote operated differently, but the version that I bought in December of 2012 works with no need to see the display.

Another Amazon review indicates that the unit has problems with a low battery condition. I find this surprising. The battery is only used when the unit is not plugged into power.

This timer (non-grounded) is arguably overkill in that it has far more functionality than most of us are ever going to want or need however the incremental cost over a simpler unit is minimal and you never know when you might use some of the fancy stuff on the menu. Programming the timer is (comparatively) easy once you get the hang of it and so far it has worked correctly. The only caveat to this is that the override feature does not function as I would have hoped. I have this timer connected to a on-demand hot water heater and I wanted to be able to override the timer remotely (the timer is in the attic) to switch it on and then later off. Pressing the remote button in fact rotates you through a menu of different override options (which of course you can't see as you are using the remote) so this function is a little more cumbersome than I would have liked. Update: 03/03/2011 Battery life is causing some issues; I have replaced the battery twice in just over 2 months. Called Levitron Customer Service with regard to the battery life issue, no response; product is now being recalled; reduced to 2 stars pending outcome. Update: 06/23/2011 Finally received replacement timers on 06/10/2011, three months after initial complaint. Thus far they are functioning correctly but I am watching battery life closely. Update (09/29/2012): timer has been functioning for over a year now without a hitch or the need to replace the battery. Increased back to 3 stars.

There's more options on this thing than I can ever imagine using, yet I found it simple enough to set up without reading the directions. The battery allows you to set it up without having to be plugged in, so you can do it while sitting on the couch rather than slouching over the outlet. The remote is super handy and is the main reason I went with this model. I use it for the lighting in my aquarium so my fish always get 12 hours of light every day, and the remote allows me to turn on the lights whenever I want to show off my fish at night without having to crawl underneath the stand to get at the plugin.

Very handy device if you want the functionality of a lamp timer, but also want an easy-to-reach control to turn the lamp on and off manually. Mine is used in conjunction with a dimmer switch for a bedroom light where the outlet is blocked by a nightstand.

Programming it seems about the same difficulty-wise as a couple of other similar timers that I have. They aren't intuitive and after fiddling with it for a while I did resort to reading the instructions to figure out what I was missing, but having done so, I didn't have much trouble setting it up. I did deduct one star for the fact that it required reading the instructions since, let's be honest, most people aren't going to remember how to do it and the instructions are likely to get misplaced after the initial setup.

Overall very happy with this purchase so far. Only features I wish it had would be a wireless remote or soft illumination of the power button on the wired remote.

I purchased two of these to control some free standing lamps in my Living room. When I activated them I noticed that the backup battery on both units indicated less then half charge brand new out of the box. What further concerns me is that the internal circuit board is not properly isolated from the case. This led to the memory dumping when I simply grasped the unit firmly to unplug it! I had to reprogram these several times because I moved them to another outlet. Apparently even though the backup battery is active the internal connections on both timers are not tight so flexing of the case interrupts the backup battery circuit dumping the memory. You must be very careful not to flex the housing or risk dumping the memory. Not recommended at all.
