Book Description

June 2003
The Journey

On May 14, 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition rowed 4 miles up the Missouri River, beginning their epic journey to the Pacific. Eighteen months and 4,000 miles later, 31 men, one woman, and a baby reached the Pacific Ocean.

On June 13, 2002, almost 200 years later, Bob and Mike Webster climbed into their homebuilt airplane and began their flight following the footsteps of Lewis and Clark.

What’s in the Book

Lewis and Clark by Air documents the expedition’s route to the Pacific with more than 500 photographs and 350 excerpts from the journals of the expedition members. Consider the 200-year-old impressions of these explorers as you view the very same country they traveled. The contrast between now and 200 years ago is striking; the lack of change over the past 200 years is even more impressive in some cases.

The Photographs

Each photograph in this book has with it the date the expedition passed that point and the number of miles they had traveled to that point. This book is enjoyable to read, interesting, and highly informative.

Free CD

Free Lewis and Clark Explorer software is included with the book. With Lewis and Clark Explorer, you can view photos of the Lewis and Clark Trail along with the original Lewis and Clark Journal entries for any day or mile range. You can also select an area on the map and view the photos and journal entries. Results can be printed, saved, or exported to a web page.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Unique and Informative Adventure, August 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Lewis and Clark by Air with CD-Rom (Hardcover)
Inside the front cover of the book it tells about Lewis and Clark beginning their journey up the Missouri River to the Pacific. Eighteen months and 4,000 miles later they reached the Pacific ocean.
Almost 200 years later Bob and Mike Webster climbed into their homebuilt airplane and followed the Missouri River like Lewis and Clark had done many years before to the Pacific. It was a unique adventure, highly informative, and a great source of history. There are more than 500 photographs in the book and 350 excerpts from the journals of Lewis and Clark and members of the expedition. Each photograph has with it the date the expedition passed that point.
The Aircam which Bob and Mike flew has an open cockpit, two seats, and two "pusher" engines. It cruises at 60 to 80 mph. On page 266 it tells all about the plane and shows "work in progress" photos while the Aircam was being built.
I found this book very interesting and enjoyable to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth a look, July 17, 2005
This review is from: Lewis and Clark by Air with CD-Rom (Hardcover)
This is not only a nice coffee table book, but the CD-ROM makes it a nice digital photographic journal of the Expedition, too. If you've wondered what the L&C Trail looks like today, this book will let you have a bird's eye view. Photographs are accompanied by the authors' notes and corresponding entries from the explorers' journals.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Bird's Eye View Of Lewis & Clark's Journey, September 27, 2003
By
This review is from: Lewis and Clark by Air with CD-Rom (Hardcover)
This book has a very interesting way of telling the story of Lewis and Clark's Journey. The combination of current day photos of their adventure, journal entries, and maps with dates and campsites creates a uniques way of teaching a part of history. It is especially unique for anyone who is familiar with the areas along their journey.
My husband and I really enjoyed reading this book.
