A Unique and Informative Adventure,
By A Customer
This review is from: Lewis and Clark by Air with CD-Rom (Hardcover)
Inside the front cover of the book it tells about Lewis and Clark beginning their journey up the Missouri River to the Pacific. Eighteen months and 4,000 miles later they reached the Pacific ocean.Almost 200 years later Bob and Mike Webster climbed into their homebuilt airplane and followed the Missouri River like Lewis and Clark had done many years before to the Pacific. It was a unique adventure, highly informative, and a great source of history. There are more than 500 photographs in the book and 350 excerpts from the journals of Lewis and Clark and members of the expedition. Each photograph has with it the date the expedition passed that point. The Aircam which Bob and Mike flew has an open cockpit, two seats, and two "pusher" engines. It cruises at 60 to 80 mph. On page 266 it tells all about the plane and shows "work in progress" photos while the Aircam was being built. I found this book very interesting and enjoyable to read.

This is not only a nice coffee table book, but the CD-ROM makes it a nice digital photographic journal of the Expedition, too. If you've wondered what the L&C Trail looks like today, this book will let you have a bird's eye view. Photographs are accompanied by the authors' notes and corresponding entries from the explorers' journals.

This book has a very interesting way of telling the story of Lewis and Clark's Journey. The combination of current day photos of their adventure, journal entries, and maps with dates and campsites creates a uniques way of teaching a part of history. It is especially unique for anyone who is familiar with the areas along their journey. My husband and I really enjoyed reading this book.

This is an excellent book. The photos are amazing. It truly is amazing to see how much or how little things have changed in the last 200 years. I highly recommend this book.

An Interesting Perspective of Lewis and Clark,
By A Customer
This review is from: Lewis and Clark by Air with CD-Rom (Hardcover)
Photos of the Lewis and Clark trail from the air are accompanied by quotes by Lewis and Clark, as well as a few other people on the expedition. It is intriguing to see the modern country traveled by Lewis and Clark together with their 200-year-old observations and descriptions. The photos and the research in this book are very well done.

If Lewis and Clark had a aircraft,
By O Shepard (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lewis and Clark by Air with CD-Rom (Hardcover)
An interested idea in a well organized book. Route maps, diary excerpts and aerial photos give a different perspective on the Lewis and Clark Trail. The authors annotate nearly every photo with a caption and mile marker. It was interesting to see familiar locations from a new perspective; from the air. However, the original expedition was a land trip and something is missing from looking at these aerial photos, especially when so many of the shots are of bridges, factories, and farms. Even the historic sites along the trail, many of which I have visited, look cold and distant from the air. The sense of history, adventure, and wonder is not here. Perhaps this would have made a better travel film.Potential buyer should also be aware of another aspect of this volume. The enclosed CD is Windows only. Mac users need not bother. |
