This review is from: Medical-Surgical Nursing (Single Volume): Assessment and Management of Clinical Problems, 7e (MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING (LEWIS)) (Hardcover)
This is a great book that is very useful for the begining RN student. It explains everything in detail and shows how things are done. Very useful for quick facts about the diseases and their processes. GREAT BUY!!!

This same book is available in a two-book set. I highly recommend the split version so you don't have to carry one, huge, heavy book around all semester!

Not for your entry level nursing student,

This review is from: Lewis Collier Lewis/Med Surg Nursg 2e Assm & Manu (Hardcover)
This book is great if your studying nursing at a Master's Degree level and the emphasis of your learning is on pathophysiology. Otherwise don't even bother with this text, it repeats itself with information every few paragraphs or refers you to other chapters when discussing a particular disease process. Unless you've had organic chemistry and some upper division biology, and bio-chemistry classes, this is not the text for the beginner. The tables are confusing, and once again the use of diagrams is overwhelming to the beginning nurse. I strongly reccomend that if your going to purchase this book, you buy it used, it's not worth the money new.

This review is from: Medical-Surgical Nursing (Single Volume): Assessment and Management of Clinical Problems, 7e (MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING (LEWIS)) (Hardcover)
I am giving this book four stars only because the pages are thin and the material is somewhat boring to read. I heard from most people that Iggy is better. Anyway, Lewis is a very good book but it is dry and blah. Also whenever I highlight the pages, the highlighter would bleed through. I paid almost a $100 for this but it looked cheaply made.

Poorly prepared textbook...,

I have just started reading this book (7th edition) for class and came across an error that really surprised me on page 536: "Acute viral rhinitis (common cold or acute coryza) is caused by an adenovirus that invades the upper respiratory tract and often accompanies an upper respiratory infection (URI)." No mention is made of any other viruses that cause the common cold. Indeed, there are more than 200 known causes of acute viral rhinitis with the most prevalent being: rhinovirus, coronavirus, respiratory synctial virus, adenovirus, parainfluenza, influenza, enterovirus, metapneumovirus, and other unknown viruses (source: Lancet). I am thinking the authors wanted to highlight the fact that adenoviruses are more likely than some other viruses (e.g., rhinovirus) to lead to complications, but failed to do so before the book was printed and/or a writer that knew nothing about microbiogy just slapped down adenovirus related to the common cold (the most frequent manifestation of the adenovirus is the common cold --but it is not the most frequent virus causing the common cold).
I can't help but wonder what other errors I am going to discover as I continue to read this book --and what errors I won't recognize. Additionally, as another critic mentioned, the pages are terribly thin. Overall, I am giving this book a one as I think substantial errors should not be in a textbook, especially one that is in the 7th edition.

I am very happy with this book. I know students that got the two volumes and they are happy, too. The information in the 7th edition is presented clearly. There are tables for everything...medications, diagnosis, illnesses, etc. Farely easy to read. Can't go wrong with it. I, also, purchased the companion, it is good for looking up things quickly and doing patho. I am now getting the study guide, as are many of my classmates. I have made the investment to do well in nursing school and this book was worth it.

Very helpful resource,
This review is from: Medical-Surgical Nursing (Single Volume): Assessment and Management of Clinical Problems, 7e (MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING (LEWIS)) (Hardcover)
I utilize this book more than any other textbook required for my program. It is a great resource for careplanning, understanding the ramifications of procedures, and supplemental reading for particularly challenging subjects. As a nursing student in a baccalaureate program, I am inundated with complex and intricate explanations for disease processes. When I need a straight forward, simple answer, this is where I go. A great starting point!

This is a better deal than buying the book by itself, and why not have the study guide {just in case ;)} I haven't had a chance to use the book or the study guide yet.
