5.0 out of 5 stars The best I have tried (in 29+ years of yeast use), May 4, 2010
In short--this is the best tasting and best quality nutritional yeast I have had in over 29 years of using such products.

If you are not familiar with brewer's yeast (whatever the brand), it is a great, easy, and cost-effective way to get a wide range of easily digestible nutrients into the body, particularly a wide range of key B-vitamins, and a long list of amino acids (what we get from protein). It is considered to be a source of B-12 (useful for vegans), although research from Dr Gabriel Cousins (an expert in wholefood nutrition) suggests we don't assimilate B12 from yeast. It is also very high in chromium, making it an excellent food for hypoglycemics. Chromium is essential for maintain blood sugar balance, and you'll get 190 mcg of it in just two tablespoons of this product.

>> The context of my review and experience with brewer's yeast <<
I have been eating brewer's yeast for about the last 29 years. My mother always had some in the pantry, so I started eating it when I was a child. I have been eating it regularly ever since. I've tried many kinds, and found out a fair bit about it. This is by far the most delicious Brewer's Yeast I have had in the past 29 years.

>> Clearing up a naming issue <<
You may notice that there are two names for edible yeast. One is "brewer's yeast" and the other is "nutritional yeast". Technically, as I understand it, brewer's yeast is a natural by-product of the fermentation process that takes place for brewing bear, wine, vinegar, and so forth. It will naturally contain some by-products of the raw materials involved in the brewing process (hops, barley, malt, sugar, etc.). Barley and malt contains gluten, so true brewer's yeast is typically NOT gluten-free. An astounding number of people (often unknowingly) have mild to severe gluten allergies, those with Celiac Disease being the worst, with total gluten intollerance. Brewer's yeast tends to have a bitter taste to it, unless it is de-bittered, but that process can result in a loss of nutrients, particularly chromium. Many people would benefit from eating more chromium, especially those with blood sugar level issues such as hypoglycaemia, pre-diabetes conditions, and full blown diabetes).

Nutritional yeast is produced specifically for people to eat as a dietary supplement. It is typically made by fermenting yeast on sugar beets, beet molasses, sugar cane, etc. For this reason it is typically gluten-free, and more likely to be GMO-free.

Some of the brewer's/nutritionals yeast sold in bulk bins has added salt. I have seen claims that some has added M.S.G. (mono sodium glutamate), although I've never seen this on the ingredient list. I have asked shops with yeast in bulk bins to show me their brewer's yeast ingredients list and seen added salt on the list. Best to avoid this.

HERE'S THE DEAL:: Lewis Labs are calling their product "Brewer's Yeast". I have no idea why. Yet, according to the above, it is technically "nutritional yeast". It is therefore (certified) gluten-free, and (certified) GMO-free (see below). It has not had to be de-bittered, and it tastes GREAT!!

>> Avoiding GMOs? <<
Yeast that is used for commercial brewing (and bread production) in the USA and Canada has a high chance of being genetically modified. If you wish to avoid consuming genetically modified organisms, use certified GMO free nutritional yeast such as this one.

>> What's so great about Lewis Labs yeast? <<
** In my opinion it tastes great. Really great. My partner and I just finished a 16oz container in about three weeks. We put it on almost every savoury meal we eat. Yes, perhaps it is slightly addictive, or maybe we are just crazy!!

** It has no added salt or MSG.
** It is GMO-free. It is certified gluten-free.
** It is certified Kosher (for those people requiring this) - see the Kosher certificate I uploaded

>> How does it compare with other brands? <<
In terms of taste it is one of the best I have tried. I also like the texture.
In terms of nutritional content, I compared it with the much cheaper Swanson Brewer's Yeast Powder, and it comes out the same or typically higher on most nutrients. Compared to the de-bittered Brewer's Yeast from Twinlabs, it is less potent on some nutrients, and about the same on others. I read numerous reviews, however, saying it does not taste nice. I've not tried it myself.

It is about twice the price of Twinlab Natural Organic Brewer's Yeast, 18oz, and close to three times the price of Swanson Brewer's Yeast 16 oz (454 g) Powder.

What I like about the Lewis Labs product is that it is great tasting nutritional yeast (despite them calling it "brewer's yeast"). It has not been de-bittered (no subsequent loss of nutrients), is GMO-free and gluten-free.

>> My recommendation <<
If you know you have no gluten allergies, and don't mind running the risk of eating genetically modified yeast (you could phone them and ask about their GMO status), I recommend trying the Swanson Brewer's Yeast Powder just because it is so much cheaper, and then compare it with the Lewis Labs product. Buy them both and try each one. If you like the taste of the Swanson product, then that might be the way to go - it is certainly a LOT cheaper. I shall leave that decision to you.

This product from Lewis Labs is the most expensive natural yeast product I think I have used. But it really does taste fantastic, so for now I will continue to use it.

I have uploaded some product label images for your information. I also uploaded the Kosher certificate. You'll find them at the top left of the page where the main product image is located. Just hold the mouse over the little thumbnails under the main image.

I wish you all the best of health,

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for hypoglycemics, August 28, 2006
This review is from: Lewis Labs - Brewer's Yeast, 32 oz powder (Health and Beauty)
I have used several brands of brewer's yeast and I personally have found Lewis Labs' brand to be of the highest quality. Two tablespoons supply 190 mcg of chromium, which is essential for hypoglycemics trying to stabilize their blood sugar levels. I have taken this product daily for twenty years with no negative side effects, and I highly recommend it. If you don't like the powdery consistency, you might try Lewis Labs Brewer's Yeast Flakes.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best tasting brewer's yeast, July 27, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Lewis Labs labels this the "only brewer's yeast that actually tastes good", and while that may sound arrogant, I think it may be true. Apparently they make it taste better than other brewer's yeasts by growing it on sugar beets.

A lot of people think brewer's yeast and nutritional yeast are the same thing, but they aren't. Both are quite nutritious and both are yeasts (dead yeast though...no worries it's going to give you a yeast infection or something) but they aren't the same thing. Nutritional Yeast has more of a cheesy flavor and to me brewer's yeast (at least this Lewis Labs brand) has more of a chicken broth taste to it (but it's vegan). Brewer's yeast is actually what they use to make Marmite and Vegemite.

I eat this whenever I have a bowl of soup...I just stir a heaping tablespoon in right before eating it. It dissolves easily and tastes great. It even smells great. My bf likes it too, plus he tried a bit plain and even thought it was sort of okay that way.

If you track what you eat in nutritional software, add some of this in and watch your nutritional profile improve greatly!
