High and Dry,
This review is from: Lewis N. Clark Waterproof Multi Purpose pouch Large (Apparel)
With a pending 25th anniversary cruise, I searched the market for some way to take quality pictures underwater without risking my digital camera or investing in hundreds of dollars worth of equipment. My compromise was the Lewis N. Clark dry bag.
The bag is heavy-duty plastic, and its waterproof integrity is guarded by a triple "zip-loc" system which is then rolled and snapped into place (per the black flap with dual yellow snaps). I shoot an "older" Kodak DX7440, which is not a terribly slim camera; space was snug for this particular camera, especially since it has a telescoping lens, but with some careful adjusting I was ready to go. I am not about to represent myself as an underwater photographer, but I will tell you the drawbacks I experienced using this setup. First, it is possible to experience a little bit of fogging in conditions where water and surface temps differ (this could possibly be remedied with an anti-fog wipe). Second, it was quite difficult if not impossible for me to see my LCD display while holding the camera underwater, so to a certain extent it was point, hope, shoot, then review and delete later, but isn't that the charm of digital photography? (I ruined NO film during the process!) Last, be sure that the bag does not have any fold or crimp in the plastic in front of the lens, or you will have distorted pix. All said and done, it was a nice dry pouch which allowed me to have camera fun while snorkeling in the Caribbean. I also used it on a recent canoeing trip to keep my camera dry, pulling it out to snap shots and then replacing it as insurance against possible dunking. Great multipurpose waterproofer, at a good price.

Dimensions are...,

...not listed in the description, so I'll post them here:
Width (seam to seam): ~6" (I didn't get super-exact, down to the 1/16th of an inch, but using my el cheapo measuring tape, 6" is a very good estimate) Length (seam to flap): ~6" (narrow side, opposite cord hole); ~7" (widest part) These dimensions were taken from the outside of the pouch; however, the seams are very thin and, except for the space where the cord hole is, you can insert items all the way to the outside edge of the pouch. This is essentially a flat envelope-style pouch, so the thickness depends on the size of the item you put into it (like stacking papers into an envelope) - the edges get "thinner", as the middle gets "thicker". Also note that only the CENTER of the pouch is completely clear (on both flat surfaces). The borders are translucent blue. You can see this in the photo, but it's not immediately apparent, as the device they used fits exactly in the clear rectangle. Most camera lenses/displays would be within this center, but I thought it was helpful to point it out. I used this to take great video of my mom doing her Famous Somersault Sequence in a pool last summer. I also took some fun photos. No leaks! I intend to buy a second pouch for my phone, as they both will not fit in this one. I have a Panasonic DMC-ZS7 and it fits nicely into this pouch, but gets a little tight when extending the zoom. Recommended! I rely on reviews here at Amazon to help me make informed buying choices. I hope this review has helped you in the same manner. If you voted this as helpful, I Thank You! :)

I recently used this item on a trip to the Bahamas and it protected all of my items perfectly. I used it to go snorkeling, swimming, and jet skiing and nothing ever got wet. I had a cloth wallet inside to keep my items hidden since it is clear but even after opening and closing it several times, it never leaked.

I bought this for my husband to use while kayaking, but we recently took it to the beach and it worked well there too. It's large enough to fit a wallet, yet small enough to hang on your neck and not have it get in the way.

Pro: It seals. Con: hard to control the camera inside to take underwater photo, but manage to do it after getting used to it. Conclusion: it is better than I thought and recommend it.

An OK Inexpensive option,

Pictures were good but, due to the high grade plastic for ensureing waterproofing, it made operating the camera difficult, could not use view finder due to blue border and angle, and LCD screen was diffult to see for focusing.
I think I would consider going for the splurge and getting the WP case designed for my camera next time. For storage and proctection from water and sand it was awsome, just a bit combersome to get in and out of the three ziplock seals under the folded snap latch

Water Tight but hangs by corner,
This review is from: Lewis N. Clark Waterproof Multi Purpose pouch Large (Apparel)
I have struggled for years to find a water tight bag that really keeps things dry - and this is the best i've found by far. Not very large, but size I desired, to just keep a few things (cash, credit cards, receipts) while I am snorkling. My only complaint was that it hangs by one corner and I previously had another similar one that hung by both sides that was more comfortable.

This thing developed a rip on the side before I had it for 2 days on a cruise. Thankfully I noticed the tear before I sent my IPHONE sailing under water. Very big disappoinment. Wish I could send it back for a refund.

I purchased this to wear at a water park all day because I wanted the convenience of having my phone and money with me and wanted to avoid making inconvenient trips to the lockers. It is entirely waterproof and it is very easy to use my iPhone right through the plastic. I could talk on the phone with ease. Because the strap hangs from the bottom of the pouch, it's a good idea to take it off before opening it to avoid spilling contents. You can't tell from the picture, but there is a sliding lock on the neck cord that allows you to shorten it around your neck. This is perfect for making sure you are not separated from your pouch on radical water slides and funnels. It would work equally well for river rapids, etc. When I go to the beach next, I will definitely put it in this pouch to protect it from sand. This is a wise investment and provides great peace of mind.

My friend had a similar bag. His wasn't ziplock/press seal like this; his was a screw seal, but i think that it did it's job. I did have to get used to using the bag. You have to put a little air inside the bag so that your camera lense has room to come out. I brought this in the ocean, was tossed by waves and the bag kept my camera nice and dry. Just make sure to follow the instructions and not get anything in the seal (i.e. sand, lint) because it will break the seal.
Enjoy and capture the memories! |
