5.0 out of 5 stars Great thumbdrive.
I was able to get this last autumn for $50 after rebate. The fact that you can fit more than a CD-ROM's worth of data on this drive is killer.

The USB 2.0 is rather necessary, though. If you're moving a large amount of data from one PC to another, you'll definitely want the 480 MBit/sec transfer capability of USB 2.0... USB 1.1 may take a few years...

3.0 out of 5 stars okay at first
This drive gave up after 1 1/2 years because connector became intermittent. I have had much better luck with San Disk Titanium Cruzer, and Corsair drives.

USB 1.1 may take a few years. However, the backward compatibility is still pretty nice, if you're only moving 10 MB or less.

I bought this before I knew of the JumpDrive MP3 player that Lexar makes. If you're really interested in adding MP3 capability later, it's only a $40 upgrade from this, which definitely enhances the value of this product.

Overall, I've had no problems, so it seems to be reliable to me as well.

It's a must-buy if you can find it for $60 or less.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great support from Lexar?, December 5, 2005
This review is from: Lexar Media 1 GB JumpDrive Sport USB Flash ( JDSP1GB-231 ) (Retail Package) (Personal Computers)
Just thought I'd add a review after having read the one below. A little over a year after purchasing the product, the rubber cap split at the top, where it was attached to my keyring.

This is a problem as being able to have it on my keyring was a selling point for me. I called Lexar and after waiting on hold for under 5 minutes, I was instructed by the first person to take my call to simply email her with my address and a request for the replacement cap and they'd ship me one. I did so and received the cap in the mail 2 days later. Now, I'm fairly close to Lexar, so the travel time was a day at most. If you're in New York or Europe or something, it will take longer.

All said and done, GREAT customer service... FAST replacement of the cap at NO COST TO ME. Lexar JumpDrive Sport is the only USB key I'd use... the form factor and support are unbeatable.

UPDATE: It looks like other people have had similar problems with the split rubber cap and have NOT been getting free replacements. Given the large number of people reporting poor customer service, I would consider my experience to be the EXCEPTION at this point, and not the rule. I'd lower my rating of this product based on this, but that's not possible.

Oh how I heart the Lexar Flash Drive. This is the best design I've seen on one of these flash drives and I always get compliments and questions on it. The rubber around the outside makes it safe to put on a set of keys--other designs don't have this and I've heard others fall off keys and get lost, get banged up beyond use, or simply aren't made to carry on keys. As a college student, it's great to have this on a set of keys so I have it everywhere. Surprisingly, I come across things quite often that I can quickly copy onto my JumpDrive and take home to my computer. This is a GREAT alternative to burning data CDs (or using floppy disks if you're still in the stone age :). I would HIGHLY recommend this. Make sure you buy the 1GB version though, because the smaller capacities aren't always capable of holding big files--either that or you'd have to delete a bunch of stuff to make room.

4.0 out of 5 stars My personal stick choice., March 15, 2006
This review is from: Lexar Media 1 GB JumpDrive Sport USB Flash ( JDSP1GB-231 ) (Retail Package) (Personal Computers)
I have two of these USB drives, a 1Gb and the 128Mb stick that came with the JumpGear MP3 player. For the record, both of my rubber caps are fully intact and original; I don't wear my sticks, or attach them to anything, so this likely explains their longevity.

The USB 2.0 ability is highly recommended, as I can move data on and off rather quickly. No surprises, it's a USB flash drive and it stores the data. It's the little touches that make it my pick.

1) The rubber cap and loop is definitely a plus. The rubber cap means I can find it quickly and it won't fumble away from my fingers. The form-fitting cap means I can probably dunk it briefly and it'll survive. These flash drives are rugged as it is, so every little bit helps.

2) The stick has a small matte-finish area for writing your phone number down in case you lose it. A good idea, practical and thoughtful.

3) The grooves for the rubber case lend themselves to being exploited with your own solution. If you really needed a loop that wouldn't break, you could likely roll your own.

4) The drive, coupled with the JumpGear MP3 player, is a good synergy. The drive fits snugly, and this is expected but in practice, manufacturing tolerances are sometimes flaky from some OEMs. With Lexar, I don't worry.

5) Warranty and customer service from Lexar is terrific. Companies that confidently stand behind their work make my short list.

You can get 1Gb of flash storage from many other places. You can get SD cards, flash drives, microDrives, etc. These JumpDrive solutions from Lexar are solid and the little extras set them apart. You wouldn't get fired for buying Lexar, let's say.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT product, July 31, 2005

I've had the Lexar Sport 1G for several months now and in no time it became something I take for granted and rely on.

The rubber gasket that holds it on a key ring is a stroke of genius. I was slightly concerned that it would start getting loose, or that the part that swings against the key ring would wear thin, but have seen no sign of either thing happening.

I've used it in USB ports on CPUs, monitors, and hubs, and it's been recognized right away, each and every time. It has a good form factor - large enough to be easy to grasp/handle, but easily small enough to fit with the "other" keys on the ring when I have them in my pocket.

I'm shopping for a second one - I want to add one for just music and radio show downloads.

The only disclaimer I'll make is that I've only used it on XP machines, so don't know whether there are any driver issues on other operating systems, although I haven't heard of any. I only wish I'd bought this thing sooner!

The cap is integrated into the rubber strap that hugs the body of the drive. This keeps it securely in place so that the plug is always protected and you really can put it on a key chain without its falling off.
Plus it even went through the washing machine once without any ill effects manifesting yet.
However, I wouldn't recommend trying this with yours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tough USB Drive with cool carry design, March 14, 2006
This review is from: Lexar Media 1 GB JumpDrive Sport USB Flash ( JDSP1GB-231 ) (Retail Package) (Personal Computers)
I have had the 1GB model for more than a year now and still love it. The rubber case did split eventually due to the thin cord to hang from my neck. For $5 I got 5 new caps. I guess I could have dealt with customer service to get them for free, but for $5 I am ok for a long time. By the way the loop on the case split slowly so I noticed it before I had chance to loose it. I would keep this drive if I didn't outgrow the size. Wish they had 2GB!!! It is a tough design and I use it MANy times a day supporting the PC's of a hospital so I use it more than a general user. It has performed without a glitch. I worry about my next USB drive that it may die like some reviews I read. The only thing through the more than year of use is the printing on the drive is wearing off.

I don't usually review items I have bought or used however I felt compelled to write this review. I was brazing copper pipe and had the drive around my neck on a lanyard, (I know not too smart) anyway while using the torch I caught the drive on fire!! It literally melted the case away. I cussed and threw the drive in the trash, my buddy grabbed it out of the trash and asked if I had tried to use it, I said right. He plugged it in and the sucker still worked!! This happened over 6 monthes ago and still going strong. I don't work for Lexar however I won't be buying anything but their jump drives from now on!!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a USB drive and go figure, it works!, March 10, 2006
This review is from: Lexar Media 1 GB JumpDrive Sport USB Flash ( JDSP1GB-231 ) (Retail Package) (Personal Computers)
I'm writing the requested review for this jump drive, but there's not much to say. It works great, just like you'd expect a usb drive to work. The 1gb label on the side is correct - it actually holds 1gb of data. The only thing interesting or unusual about this drive is that it's especially sturdy, even without the rubber strap. And the rubber strap fits great on a keychain, I don't ever have to worry about this thing breaking in my pocket or getting lost. I have 2 of them.

Have had mine for 6 months and still going strong. Quick recognition of device, quick transfer rate, plenty of storage space. Love that you can attach it to your keychain. Call me a nerd, but something about always having a lot of storage space on me is reassuring :)
