4.0 out of 5 stars Lexar Device Will Not Read 32GB CF Cards June 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
This USB 3.0 device cannot access my 32GB CF cards. I have two SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB and two SanDisk Extreme 60MB/s 32 GB cards. I've tried to read all four 32GB cards with the Lexar reader and none of them are discoverable on my new PC running Windows 7 Ultimate.

To test the device, I rebooted three times. Once with the reader disconnected and then reconnected after boot, once with the reader connected during the boot, and once with the reader connected and a card inserted. Under none of these conditions does the Lexar device offer me access to any of my 32GB cards. All of the cards were formatted "in camera" via my Nikon D3 (as is recommended for CF cards). The 32GB cards don't show up as a drive in My Computer nor are they recognized in Lightroom 3.

HOWEVER, the reader works perfectly with my SanDisk Extreme III 16GB cards. Apparently the problem only lies with larger cards. I haven't tested the device with cards smaller than 16GB.

After my purchase and via subsequent research here on Amazon, this same problem was reported by other reviewers in regards to the USB 2.0 version of the device.

Although the device worked with my 16GB cards, you might want to hold off on your purchase of this reader as apparently Lexar has some kind if hardware or software issue that is continuing through several iterations of their product (based on the reviews I've read here about the USB 2.0 device).

UPDATE: I've received a replacement reader and the new device appears to be working correctly. I'm able to read all of my 32GB cards with the new device. I'm upgrading my rating from 1 star to 3 stars for now. I'll upgrade it to 4 stars if the new device operates flawlessly through several events.

ANOTHER UPDATE: I received a call from a senior Lexar engineer a few days after my support call and he wanted to follow up on getting the problem fixed. I told him that I'd let him know if the problem remained after getting the replacement. I've missed his call 3 times now and he keeps calling me every day. I'm pretty impressed with that follow up so I'm upping the stars to 4.

Nikon D800E on order - check
Brand new MacBook Pro with Retina display set up and ready to go - check
Lexar 3.0 Dual Card Reader purchased from Amazon - check

Plug it in and ... nothing. Plug it in to my ancient MacBook Pro that I'm replacing - everything is fine.

Try it again on the new computer ... nothing.

Google "Lexar USB 3.0 card reader problem" Aha! Of course. From the Lexar FAQ:

Does the reader work with a MAC® system?
Yes, the reader works with Mac OS 10+. However, we are aware of the compatibility issues users may be experiencing when trying to use the Lexar Professional USB 3.0 Dual-Slot Reader with the newest MacBooks, and we're working diligently to provide a firmware upgrade in the near future.

So, it works, but not on the only Macs with USB 3.0. Unbelievable. Thanks Lexar.

Wow, finally a USB 3.0 device that is as fast as they say it is supposed to be. I just downloaded 268 Canon 7D raw images in less than a minute!

I've been uploading RAW photos directly from my D700. I wanted something that wouldn't take all day. This slot reader is a bit faster.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Fine
his adaptor work fine with my USB 3.0 port and is very unobstrusive on my desktop. I bought it for its CF capability but have also been using the SD slot. Good value for the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fastest CF and SD card reader
You DO have to go to mfg. website to download UDMA7 support. Once you do that, plug it into a USB 3.0 port and it is as fast as you can buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Speed demon for SDcards
To like: This reader is seriously fast for SD cards. I use 30MB/s rated Sandisk Ultra cards and this reader normally exceeds that speed pulling images off the card. Read more
