1.0 out of 5 stars False price - $59.99 with Office Depot
I tried to purchase this Lexar 256 MB SD memory card in mid-May for $59.99 through Office Depot/Amazon. However, a day after I received my confirmation e-mail, I suddenly received a cancellation e-mail with no explanation. I called Office Depot & found out that an incorrect price was advertised, so my order was cancelled. Now a day later, both Internet sites still...

...with this SD card. I had recently bought 2 digital cameras for an upcoming trip to the UK and needed more memory of course. I'm an EE so I started comparing specs. (with a bias towards low price). Here's the skinny:
The Lexar 32x 256MB was $60, the 32x 512MB was $170. The big brands were more yet. The best compramise in MB/$ came in at 256MB. Another issue with the bigger cards is getting over-invested in your photo storage media. If you get a 1 gig card, sure you can load it with 750 high-res pictures, enough for your whole 2 weeks just clicking away. What then if the (one) card gets lost, squished, or just craps out? The whole trip of memories gone forever! The most I was willing to risk was about 256Mb - maybe one fourth of the trip, and with both my wife and myself shooting similar pics on 2 cameras- further risk reduction.

The card... works like a charm. I've tried all 4 I bought in both cameras - all worked perfect (practiced over 100 pics getting the hang ov camera features so far). I have 2 different readers (the Kodak 6in1 reader and the little $15 Lexar USB pod) and they both read and write perfectly. I get about 5 MB/s transfer (rough estimate) to 2 different PCs (work and home), and also use the cards to transfer general data.

Best bang for the buck of all the SD cards available right now!

5.0 out of 5 stars How many pictures will it store?, November 5, 2004
This review is from: Lexar Media SD256-32-231 256 MB 32x Secure Digital (SD) Memory Card (Personal Computers)
How many pictures will it store? It is the most commonly asked question from digital camera enthusiast but usually the question that is the most difficult to get a straight answer about. Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.

The Lexar Media 256MB SD Card SD256-231, like most 256MB cards, will store on average 284 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 213 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera, 128 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 102 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 80 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

I truly hope this review was helpful to you in determining whether this card is the right capacity for your specific needs.

I picked up this card for my Garmin Ique 3600 GPS/PDA as I was told a fast speed card would help. I'm no expert, but I haven't experienced and problems with the card. It is reliable and speedy.

The lady I spoke with at Office Depot said that the actual price was $75 ... so beware if you think you're getting a good buy!

I ordered it for $59.99, even paid for the expedited service, but two days later it was canceled. Not sure why. After reading another review it seems the price was incorrect. I thought it was too good to be true!

I have not a clue on its performance.
