This review is from: Lexar Sport JDSP256-231 USB 2.0 256 MB USB Flash Drive (Retail Package) (Personal Computers)
I have a SanDisk Cruzer Mini 256MB USB2 flash drive at work, and bought this Lexar 256MB JUmpdrive USB2 for home use. This Lexar drive works great, as advertised. Fast USB2 transfer, no problem detecting on Win2K Pro and Server.
However, after using both, I've come to the decision that I like the SanDisk Cruzer Mini better in terms of design (NOT in terms of performance). For starters, SanDisk Cruzer Mini is thinner than the Jumpdrive by about 1/3. Also, when the Cruzer Mini is connected to the USB port, one end of the flash drive lights up and blinks with activity. Real bright and obvious. When you use the "Unplug or Eject Hrdware" function to remove the drive, the light goes off, so you know when it's safe to remove the drive. The Jumpdrive also has a light, but it's a tiny light built into one side of the the main body. So, if for whatever reason your USB port interface is upside down (as it is with my 3.5" bay In-Win I530 media reader), you can't see the light at all! It also blinks with file activity, but it's nowhere as bright nor obvious as the Cruzer Mini model. Because of the small size of the light, it's very difficult to see when it's lit and when it's not. One additional distinction between the two: the Cruzer Mini comes with stand-alone plastic cap that's loose when not attached to the drive (i.e., when the drive is plugged into the computer). The Cruzer Mini comes with a lanyard to wear it around your neck--not very convenient unless you use it only in your office. The Jumpdrive's cap is a molded rubber-type that wraps around the flash drive and also comes with a keyring hole. To be honest, though, I don't know how long the keyring hole will last before breaking. In terms of performance, the Cruzer Mini and the Jumpdrive are about the same. However, for the interface design and ease of use, I'd give a nod to the Cruzer Mini.

I just bought mine today, and I wish I had 3 more! I had been satisfied with the Purple one and the Blue one, but their bulbous shapes make it difficult to use in a 4 or even 7 port USB hub....you have to jockey the others around in order to get space for those. Not with the Lexar Sport! It's slim shape allow it to fit right in. And I LOVE the fact that the lid is rubber, and fits around the drive sturdily. A chain or lanyard holds onto the lid, so you take the drive off and use, then replace. Why didnt they think of this before? I cant tell you how many of the other lids I have lost, misplaced, stepped on, leaving the USB ports naked. Thanks Lexar for designing this one!

I had problem with the initial 256 Sport where it only showed 122MB after format. Lexar support is VERY good & responded quickly after I reported this particular defective drive. Email response was within 24hr, and within a couple days of sending the bad drive in, I have a new one at my door -- and it's been fine so far.
It's rugged, small, USB 2.0-fast and it's a "plug-n-play" device - no software needed (I use Win2000.) Rubber cap is fine, very sturdy. You can put this in a pocket, keychain or hang around your neck (wish it comes with lanyard.) I've used it to store & transfer pix from my digital camera, music files, word processing docs, etc. Very handy indeed. I think 512MB would be a better choice for me since I use this device frequently. I would recommend this product. 4.5 stars !!

I use this thing to carry files to and from work. It works flawlessly with no drivers needed on a PC running Windows XP and on a Mac G4 running OS9.2. I've also loaded it up with MP3 music to play on a portable jumpdrive MP3 player, which also works flawlessly. Unlike another review that I've read, this one works fine in the remote USB port on the Mac's keyboard, I don't have to plug it into the back of the G4. The slim design means it fits in easily beside other USB cables when the ports are spaced close together, as they always seem to be. File transfer is fast fast fast on a USB2 port. The rubber case is really sturdy--I've attached it to my keys so that I can dump it in my pocket and forget about it until I need it, and it's always right there. The "sport" concept is a really good idea--it's sturdy and rugged and can handle bouncing around with coins and keys as I go about my daily life. No special software needed, works on different platforms, rides in my pocket, tough enough that I can forget about it when I'm not using it--what more could you ask for? It's perfect.

I bought 2 of these flash drives because of its price (less than $60) and for its flexible rubber cap that wraps around the whole drive, so losing the cap is a near impossible. I am using it as a permanent part of my toolkit as a PC repair technician, wearing it around my neck. It is also small and thin: not much larger that Sandisk's USB drives.Due to the size of files I transfer on a day to day basis, I think I have to buy Lexar's 512MB drive instead very soon. Only one grouse with the drive: no lanyard in the package!! but it is THE best brand to buy in terms of design. Well done, Lexar!

I've used USB drives before at work but this is the first I've bought for myself. The design is great. I'm a college student, so I love that I can feel safe toting this around in my backpack and I don't have to be too concerned about breaking or losing it. The wrap-around cap is really nice in that aspect. I personally also like the red color because it's harder for me to overlook. It stands out so well that I won't accidentally leave it behind in a computer lab or try to pack up my laptop with it still in. It's also probably the tiniest drive I've ever seen. There are a lot of USB drives out there with less memory that are still bigger than this one. Even with the cap on, it's only about 2 1/2 inches long and barely over a half-inch wide. The profile is very skinny which means there's no problem plugging other things into an adjacent USB port. This isn't true of every drive out there. Overall, it's a great value and a very well-thought-out product.

I love the design of this drive. It is slim, and has a rubber cover. You can hang it around your neck, or stick it in your pocket. Very rugged, and as far as I'm concerned, it has the best design of any of the drives I have used. I would not hesitate to recommend this drive, as it has worked flawlessly for me. No drivers to install, just plug it in. I am thinking about getting the 512 Sport now!

Pros
The 256 mb lexar sport is set at a good price, and for general office type stuff it is basically enough room to replace zip drives or burning data cds- The rubber cover for this drive is very well designed and protective- against spills and shock and keys grinding against it- it is the JEEP of flash drives Cons the "activity light" is supposed to be on only when data is transfering, but my one stays on the whole time the unit is plugged in... who cares though- it works fine.

I really like this jump drive. I have been using it almost daily for more than 6 months now, and it works VERY quickly and very smoothly. Never a glitch, and it tranfers data really quickly, both when I use a Pentium IV with Windows XP, and when I use my laptop, which has a Pentium III 900. The drive does not work with my old Pentium II 350 that uses Windows 98, though, and I have not been able to find proper drivers to make it work, but I have not tried very hard...
The cap is a very useful addition, and what surprised me very very positively is that after taking the jump drive in and out its cap for about 500 times or more, the cap is as in good shape as it was when I just purchased it. It really did not loosen a bit. I am very happy with this product, and the price is great! UPDATE: uhm, I have to revise my previous optimism about how sturdy the cap is. After about two years of use, the rubbery cap did break (but the drive still works flawlessly. UPDATE 2: on the other hand, in April 2009 this little thing still works flawlessly!!

Very Good! Survived the Washing Machine & Dryer!,

This is my first jump drive and it has beat all of my expectations!
It is fast and easily fits into the narrow USB slot on the front of my work computer. Many of my friends who own other brands have had trouble getting theirs to fit. The rubber cap is especially cool. It has a loop that surrounds the entire drive. Nice and secure. No lost caps! The other day I thought I had lost my drive, only to discover it in the clothes dryer. It had gone through an entire wash and dry cycle in the pocket of my pants! Still worked like a champ with no data loss... Highly recommended!! |
