Amazon.com Review

Printing, scanning, and copying--all in one--this low-profile device makes an ideal addition to any home PC system with low-volume printing needs. The Lexmark X75 can print from a PC or a Mac, scan images to your computer, and copy in black and white or color. It is one of a new generation of all-in-ones, a good deal smaller and neater than similar earlier devices.

Taking paper from a feed tray which folds up from the top surface of the machine to a near vertical position at the back, the X75 feeds to a pullout tray at the front, or directly onto the desktop. It uses the same print mechanism as the Z25 and Z34 printers, with the same diminutive color and black ink cartridges. For replacement, the top section of the all-in-one hinges up, and a red plastic stay springs out to support it, like the hood of an old sports car.

The lid of the machine lifts up to reveal an A4-size flatbed scanner, which can scan at up to 600 x 1,200 dpi resolution. A small control section at the front right of the top panel offers power, page feed, scan, black copy, and color copy buttons, plus two status lights. The real power of the machine rests in its software control, however. As well as the driver for the X75, the accompanying CD-ROMs provide OCR software, a photo editor, and fax software.

Print quality from the X75 is pretty good, with dense black text and bright, reasonably precise colors. Color print, as indicated by a 5-by-3-inch test photo, showed up well, with little noticeable banding. We noticed minor dithering, but the dither dots were so small that they were hard to see. Print times were also good for a machine at this price, though it's never going to break any speed records.

Copying was not as successful. The printed copy lost sharpness and color depth--blacks came through grey and colours looked muddy. We compensated for this, to an extent, through software manipulation, but black-and-white copies are, in general, much more successful than colour ones.

All in all, the X75 is an ideal multifunction device for home or small office use that takes up little space but delivers big results. --Simon Williams

4.0 out of 5 stars Good all-in-one, April 24, 2003

This review is from: Lexmark X75 All-in-One Multifunction (Office Product)
The Lexmark X75 is an excellent deal for the price. The software is fool proof, very easy to scan, copy, and print, even if you've never done it before. Printer quality is great. Scanner can scan at quite high resolutions (up to 9600 dpi). The highest resolution I've scanned at is 600 dpi and it looks great. Haven't used the copier much, but it also does a decent job. Size is great as well; doesn't take up too much space. The only problems I can think of are that the ink cartridges only hold about 20 ml of ink...and it prints quite slow in color. Overall it's a great printer, but don't think you're paying a rock-bottom price, because you'll pay for it in the end with the printer cartridges.

1.0 out of 5 stars No tech support, October 15, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Lexmark X75 All-in-One Multifunction (Office Product)
My mother-in-law got this printer with her computer, and I am constantly over at her house trying to fix it, or replacing its ink cartridges.

Not only are the ink carts comparable in price to the printer itself, but they only last for a ridiculously small number of pages. And the color cart does not track levels of cyan, magenta, and yellow separately. This printer ran out of cyan and still pretended that the color cart was half full of ink.

Recently, the printer started printing only the tops of pages. It prints a few inches, then form feeds a mostly blank page. Naturally, I tried troubleshooting, until I was left with "contact technical support". This consists of people named "Pradeep" and "Ali" sending you form letters instructing you to do things you have done already. Then you reply to the e-mail that you did that already, and it didn't work. They then happily send you the next form letter from their flowchart, until you burst a blood vessel from pure frustration.

I recommend that you do not buy this printer, or any other from Lexmark.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great features for a low price, January 14, 2003
This review is from: Lexmark X75 All-in-One Multifunction (Office Product)
If you're looking for a multifunction printer/scanner/copier, consider this one. It has a flatbed scanner with photo quality printing and versatile settings. You can do any number of creative projects on this machine and with the help of the software you don't have to be very knowledgeable to do it. I am impressed with the quality of the black text printing as well - it has a clear crisp look to it. The software installation was quick and easy and there's a very low learning curve for this machine. All in all, I'm well satisfied.
