Caveat Emptor and Time to Say Goodbye!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Lexmark #20 Color Ink Cartridge (15M0120) (Office Product)
I've owned a Z43 purchased back in 2001 knowing that replacement ink cartridges would be pricey (personal laser jets were not affordable even when my tech heavy portfolio was doing well). However, I was willing to make that tradeoff since the printer was highly rated and reasonably priced. My color printing requirements are relatively modest, about 1-2 pages/week. Here is a review of this product with a historical perspective.
2001 cartridges: Excellent
2002 cartridges: Good
2003 cartridges: Fair
2004 cartridges: Extremely poor
Over the years, the quality of the cartridges has deteriorated significantly along with the quality of the retail packaging. I've always bought from reputable retailers, including Amazon, but who knows whether these retailers were buying authentic cartridges or unknowingly moving counterfeits that were slipped into the wholesale channels?
My most recent and FINAL purchase of the 15M0120 color cartridge was from Target last month (July 04). I print in color about once a week, and the cartridge was dead in one month. Good thing that I bought it on sale for only $25, since those four color prints cost me ONLY $6.25 each...
I attempted to exchange it but even Target with its GENEROUS return/exchange policy politely told me to call their corporate 800-number. The Target voice response system then referred me to a Lexmark 800 number. After being placed on hold for tech support even though I wanted to make a warranty claim, I finally gave up. For kicks, I checked Lexmark's website only to find out that problems with printing supplies are supposed to be handled with the retailer.
THUS, NEITHER THE RETAILER NOR MANUFACTURER WILL STAND BEHIND THIS PRODUCT.
It's not worth my time to pursue this matter any further, but I figure that a review of the product is my way of saying GOODBYE.
Addendum: I printed out a copy of the warranty from Lexmark's website and brought the dead cartridge back to Target since it clearly stated that printing supply problems are handled by the retailer. The manager at Target approved an exchanged.

High priced compared to others,

Before you buy a new printer, see which cartridges are available at discount sellers like Costco. While the Lexmark Z51 is an excellent printer, the cartridges are only available at full price retail stores. The Z31 has cartridges available at Costco for almost half the price. But if your reading this, it probably already to late. . .

Why does price continue to be so high?,

The print quality is good but the price is only for the rich. Lexmark needs to bring these prices down and fast. I may soon have to stop using my printer because I can no longer afford these cartridges. I am now very sorry that I bought the Lexmark printer, I should have gotten one where the cartridges are cheaper.

Inconsistencies in cartridge quality,
By A Customer
This review is from: Lexmark #20 Color Ink Cartridge (15M0120) (Office Product)
While the LexMark z51 can be an incredible quality printer, for the past 9 months or so, the quality of the color cartridges has varied wildly. I do a lot of photo printing, and end up having to exchange about 1 out of 2 color cartridges I buy. The main problems is lines on the prints, and the yellow gives out about 1/4 of the way through the ink supply, turning skin tones excessively pinkish neon.I emailed LexMark about this problem, but never received a reply, so I would have to say follow-up customer service isn't a priority with this company. It's a shame, one would think a [money] printer with [less money] cartridges that boasts of printing 1200x1200 resolution would have higher quality standards, but this doesn't seem to be the case. I would have to say my next printer will definitely not be a LexMark. A shame, but to paraphrase the old saying; When it's good, it's very, very good, but when it's bad, it's a pain in the cartookus to keep exchanging faulty cartridges. Jenny

Expensive, but what did you expect?,
This review is from: Lexmark #20 Color Ink Cartridge (15M0120) (Office Product)
Printers have a way of selling relatively cheap, knowing that the money is not in the printer itself but the ink. This is true for Lexmark. It is also true for every other printer of any quality. Point being, yes, my Lexmark cartridges are expensive, and occasionally I buy the cheap re-fill carts, but nevertheless, the Z51 is an awesome printer that I will own for years!

I will only buy the Lexmark brand cartridge for my printer. The no-name refills do not work. Got this one at a great price on Amazon.

Don't Order Used Color Cartridges for your Lexmark!,

I ordered my first Lexmark color cartridge from someone who had used cartridges and my printer hasn't worked since. I had decided to order it used because there wasn't a new one available. I just purchased the Lexmark and until this time I really enjoyed it but not being able to purchase new cartridges has made it difficult to enjoy the printer. I would not purchase another used color cartridge for my lexmark.

Colors are very true-to-life, and the ink dries very fast. A bit steep, pricewise, but it does last long, and is a vast improvement over my old bubblejet, which I used to think was great!
