The Optra T610 is another in the fine series of laser printers from Lexmark. The distinctive boxy design makes it a bit taller than some units, but not quite as deep, and this can be a real plus in a cramped space (though some additional space for ventilation around the machine is essential). Given the printer's weight, it's remarkably easy to move around--again, an aspect of the smart design. Even getting it out of the box was a breeze. Lexmark gets bonus points in our book for utilizing Styrofoam packing blocks that are sensibly designed to allow the printer to slide easily out of the carton without needing an extra set of hands.

Setting up the printer took only about five minutes, including software installation. The toner cartridge loaded easily; there's virtually no way you could install it incorrectly. The operator panel displays a simple summary of what the printer is doing at all times, from simply being ready, to being out of paper. The paper tray can hold up to 350 sheets and the printer accepts up to three additional paper trays, upgrading to 500- and 2,000- sheet input drawers, an 85-envelope feeder, or a duplex unit.

The Optra T610 can print about 12 pages per minute with very few delays. If you experience a paper jam, as we did in testing, the front-opening design makes extracting the offending sheet a cinch. We experienced consistently good print quality, with nice saturation of blacks, and clean and even distribution of full-page photos. All in all, this streamlined, solidly built unit will make a good and dependable workhorse. --Michael Greenberger
