In fact, apparently this is the way that Lexmark guarantees that they sell replacement ink cartridges.

I got tired of the Canon MX315 I bought last year and looked for a replacement. The Canon worked ok but it had an annoying problem. It took an extremely long time for the first page of a print job to start. It went through a long cycle where it prepped the print heads. Anyway, this Lexmark is a great printer-quiet and fast and the first page comes out quickly. I love the double sided printing too. It has Airprint so I can print directly from my iPhone. Only one little bug... when we get a power hit, it looses the wireless connection and goes offline and the only way I can seem to get it working again is to reload the software. Otherwise this would be 5 stars.

We ordered this printer and -- suddenly -- two-sided printing would not work. The company replaced the printer with another version of the same model, which was nice. They sent the new printer and then we sent back the bad printer after. So we could at least use the limited functions while we waited for the new printer to come. But, again, the two-sided printing will not work. It is not a software issue, I spent hours on the phone with them confirming that. They had me do a two-sided copy test and made the order for the new printer when it spat out two sheets instead of one, two-sided sheet. I'm not looking forward to going over all that on the phone again; hopefully they will send another printer and hopefully this one will work. But, that is two versions of this same model that have the same hardware defect. I do not recommend buying this printer, but I like this companies customer service and, hopefully, a they have a good printer out there somewhere.

I purchased this printer for the scanner function mostly, but I also used for printing. When I did print, it was always in black. In fact, I have NEVER even printed in color. Yet, I watched as I started getting warnings about the color ink cartridges getting low. That should have been a red flag, but I figured I'm not going to worry about it because I only use the black anyway. Then one day I got a warning that I needed to replace the color cartridges, and basically all the printing functions stopped. Even though I had a full black cartridge (after buying a 2-pack of Lexmark black cartridges), the printer wouldn't print at all. This was so frustrating because I had plenty of black ink, yet the printer basically wouldn't allow me to use it until I replaced the other cartridges I never used. I got online to try to find a solution, only to discover that I was not alone. In fact, apparently this is the way that Lexmark guarantees that they sell replacement ink cartridges. From what I've learned, each cartridge has a microchip that counts how many prints have been done, and when a certain number is reached, all cartridges shut down until the maxed out cartridge(s) are replaced. NOT refilled, but actually replaced. After learning this, I wouldn't be surprised if my color cartridges are actually full, but I've exceeded the allowable number of print jobs, thus, I'm supposed to buy more cartridges. FRUSTRATING! But I found a solution. DON'T BUY THIS OR ANY OTHER LEXMARK PRODUCT EVER! My message to Lexmark...you lost a customer. Fool me once...

had to purchase because my Lexmark 5150 (BEST PRINTER EVER for me) not compatible with Windows 8. This s515 takes
to long to start and turn OFF. makes crazy noises on start up. Checked the price of ink replacements this week and could
not believe the price , will not be able to afford them...... it does print good.

I will NEVER buy a lexmark printer again. Once they stop selling this style they don't care what is wrong with it they want you to pay more to talk to their specialist

if you have black ink but no color it still will not print, its a nasty trick for lexmark to get you to keep buying more high priced ink from them...

I have used Lexmark printers for years and been well satisfied with them but this is the worst printer I have ever tried to use. I purchased it in May 2013 and in August of 2013 the print head locked up and would not initialize. Printer kept reporting a "paper jam", there was no "paper jam". I sought recourse from the seller but the reply was sorry about your luck but the warranty has expired. After numerous resets and manually forcing the print head to reset, the printer worked for a short while then jammed again. It will not reliably print at any given time. This one is headed for the trash. Time to try another brand as Lexmark is now out of the inkjet business. I believe they might have been "out of the business" when this one was made.

Purchased this printer at a major discount thru Frys Electronics. First time buyer of Lexmark printer, however, so far all good. The only problem i encountered was that this printer only picks up wireless N routers. Unfortunately, my router only picks up G/B signals. Not really the company's fault as i should have read the specs. I had to connect the printer via ethernet; not a true wireless setup, but it does the job. Now i can print from all my devices: PC, laptop, tablet, and phone.
